In the span of two decades dedicated to serving our country, I underwent a transformative journey that sculpted the individual visible today. Entering the Army as a timid and uncertain youth with no clear path and limited aspirations, I faced the reality that my modest 5’8" stature wouldn’t propel me into the NBA as I had once dreamt. Similarly, my social skills, or the lack thereof, seemed inadequate to unlock the doors to the promising future I envisioned.

However, within the walls of the Army, I discovered not only my true self but also forged connections with individuals who became my chosen family. Hailing from diverse backgrounds and walks of life, these fellow soldiers accompanied me through the highs and lows of our shared experiences. Together, we navigated the unpredictable terrain of military life, overcoming challenges and embracing victories as a united front.

These twenty years became the crucible in which my character was refined, my resilience tested, and my sense of purpose solidified. The camaraderie formed within the ranks transcended mere duty, evolving into a profound bond that I cherish deeply. About the author

Ben’s family’s house was a sanctuary among the groomed lawns and towering trees. The first rays of sunshine gently stroked Ben’s serene face, waking him up. He slowly stretched under the lovely covers, enjoying the early light.

Ben sat up with a satisfied sigh, his dusty blonde hair ruffled from sleep. His room was decorated with prominent physicians and medical diagrams, showing his intense hunger for information and intellectual curiosity. Freshly made coffee mixed with the brisk morning breeze that whispered through the slightly ajar window called him out of bed to start a new day full of possibilities and promises.

Ben swung his legs over the bed and put his bare feet on the smooth carpet, eager to face the trials ahead. He enjoyed feeling anchored and ready to face the world. Ben enjoyed the refreshing shower and shuffled to the restroom. Droplets fell on his skin, waking him up; he stood beneath the steady stream, letting the water’s soft caress lift his sleepy thoughts.

Ben’s mirror image showed his dedication. His hazel eyes sparkled with ambition, expressing his aspirations and objectives daily. He purposefully adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles to seize the day. Ben’s well-chosen attire projected professional sophistication beyond his years. His well-fitted pants, crisp, charcoal gray button-down shirt, and polished shoes showed his professionalism and attention to detail.

Ben sat at his desk, checking his notes, as the early light illuminated his room. His mother peeked through the doorway, a warm smile on her face. Ben, breakfast is ready. Come downstairs, dear. Ben looked up. Please wait, Mom. I want to ensure I revise this for today’s chemistry test. His mother beamed with pride. You’re such a hardworking student, Ben. Your dedication will take you far.

The delicious smell of his mother’s cooking surrounded him when he went downstairs. The busy kitchen seemed cozy. The windows let in sunlight, brightening and warming the space. His mother’s murmur, the clinking of pots, and the sizzling of ingredients filled the air. Good morning, Ben, his mother said with love. I prepared your favorite pancakes. They’re just about ready.

Ben grinned, curving his lips. Thanks, Mom. You always brighten mornings. As he sat at the kitchen table, the spread before him was a feast for the senses. Stacks of golden pancakes with fresh berries vied for his attention with platters of sizzling bacon and fluffy scrambled eggs. The sweet-savory symphony swirled on his tongue, delighting him.

His family sat around the table, every one distinctive. His robust and wise father sat with a newspaper, sharing worldly knowledge and a proud grin. His little sister spoke animatedly, infusing the room with pleasure and purity.

Morning, Dad, Ben said, pouring orange juice. Any interesting medical news in the paper today? His father laughed and folded the page. There’s a cancer research breakthrough article. Targeted medicines are advancing rapidly. Son, it’s fascinating. Ben’s eyes lit up with excitement. That’s great. Can you pass it?

Ben’s younger sister, Cas, ran into the kitchen as he read the story. Lily Cassandra, known as Cas outside her family and Lily in her family, looked at Ben with excitement gleaming in her eyes.

She sat next to Ben, grinning mischievously. Big brother! Are you acing the tests again? Cas inquired, awestruck.

Ben laughed, tousling her tresses. I’m trying, Lil. You know I want to become a doctor someday. Gotta keep those straight A’s! Cas nodded, her eyes twinkling with pride for her brother. Ben, you’ll be the best doctor. I know.

Ben told the family about his dreams and resolved to become a doctor over breakfast. His parents listened intently, their pride and support palpable. I’m so proud of you, Ben, his mother replied with emotion. You’re always assisting others. You’ll be a great doctor.

His father nodded excitedly. Son, medicine is honorable. It takes commitment, sensitivity, and curiosity. You’re all that. Ben felt grateful and determined. Thanks, Mom and Dad. I value your constant support. I’ll try to make you both proud.
