Introduction to 4D Devotional Series
4D Devotionals Series is a collection of 30-day Christian devotionals, each with its own unique theme. 4D is for its emphasis on being Daily, having Depth, the aim towards Discipleship, and Drive, it’s intended to inspire personal or mission action.
DAILY
God didn’t create us to be mindless robots who just arbitrarily follow rules. We’re special! We were created to be free, sentient, spiritual beings who have relationship with Him forever. He desires us to know, love, and relate to Him, with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength (Mark 12:30). He desires us to know Him through His Word, His Church, and His Spirit, with a lifestyle of worshiping Him in both spirit and truth (John 4:24).
Correct beliefs and righteous lifestyle are important but these are simply the means to an ultimate goal: a good relationship with God. Like all relationships, if you want your relationship with God to be good, you need to desire it, be intentional, and put effort into it. You must allow Him to get to know you, let down your emotional walls, not hide behind lofty or vague religion. You need to be real and share your authentic self with Him.
For everyone born again, God lives in them, and is always with them. You might ask, if God is with us the whole day is it still important to have dedicated time for devotion, Bible reading, prayer, etc? Yes, just because we have quantity time with God doesn’t mean we have quality time with Him.
Regular, private quality time with God is one of the best ways to develop your relationship and have greater intimacy (closeness) with Him. Consider the difference between just spending time with someone watching TV on the couch next to you vs. spending quality time with them face-to-face, entrusting them with your deepest desires and most intimate secrets. There’s greater spiritual growth and supernatural life transformation in God’s presence. Pursue an encounter with Him every day.
DEPTH
I’ve seen believers grow and experience changes in months that people who have been Christians for decades haven’t. Many popular sermons and books are too surface-level. They’re too seeker-sensitive, trying to gently ease people into the shallow end of the pool without offending them.
Most daily devotionals are 1-2 minute personal stories offering a thought to ponder. Sure, something is better than nothing, but we shouldn’t give in to this type of bare-minimum thinking. Settling in this way is one of the reasons why many Christians are not living spiritually free, and why there’s a lack of spiritual growth and fervor in many churches. It’s a red flag if you’re only willing to give God two minutes of your day. This indicates that you’re not truly pursuing God, lack rightly placed priorities, or have an unbalanced, unsustainable schedule packed with too many things.
Some people go to the other extreme - spending several hours a day like a spiritual monk, isolated, and disconnected from the rest of the world. But we have not been called to be so deep in our studies or devotional time that we’re not supporting others in the church, or being a good witness to others in the world. It’s important to also have enough time to be a part of a spiritual community that is on mission together in the world.
To have unshakable faith and dramatic transformation, we must unpack the deep truths of God, the Bible, theology, understand doctrine, be able to refute false beliefs, and apply these truths to our lives. The goal of this series is to explain then walk through activities that provide real depth while still being brief enough to be enjoyable, convenient, and daily.
There’s a healthy balance between the extreme of only 1-2 minutes and 4 hours! I recommend getting started with 20 minutes per day. This will be a good daily habit to begin to build. Work your way up to having a regularly dedicated time with God between 20 minutes and 1 hour per day. Our daily devotional readings and assignments take about 20 minutes. Begin there, then add in additional Bible reading, worship, prayer, journaling, communion, etc. according to your preferences or as God leads.
Daily readings average 10-12 minutes. Some are sermon-like, offering wisdom, encouragement, and practical tips with 10 minutes worth of reflection and growth activities. Others are like a Bible school class with most or all of the lesson just reading. Some are practical ministry training to equip you to live more like a disciple of Jesus. While this 30-day book has a unified theme, each day
is independent and teaches a single topic. Topics are introduced and then broken into sub-points for easy understanding.
The Bible is quoted extensively and verses are often referenced, easily providing some direction if you would like to include additional Bible reading that day. Prayer and journaling assignments are also included each day to help you discuss the topics with God and apply them to your life.
DISCIPLESHIP
A lot of popular devotional content is surface-level Christianity or merely pseudo-Christian, more so about just improving your life or becoming a better person. This type of devotional will not ground or sustain you. You must progress from being a newborn that needs the spiritual milk of elementary Bible truth, advice, positive thinking, and motivation talk, into mature adulthood consuming solid spiritual food (1 Cor. 3:2). We must progress from being self-centered wanting God to give us what we want, into disciples of Jesus asking God what it is that He wants.
Jesus said to make disciples and teach them to obey what He taught (Matt. 28:19-20). God wants you to be transformed from the inside-out (Matt. 5). We’ve been predestined to become more like Jesus in every way (Rom. 8:29). This is God’s goal for us. It’s not even about just believing the right things, or behaving the right way, but becoming like Jesus through supernatural personal transformation. While each lesson will focus on something, what they all ultimately have in common, is they all work towards making you more like Jesus (i.e. discipleship
).
The goal of each lesson is to push past the superficial level to get to root issues hindering your spiritual development. To destroy the ways Satan, your sinful desires, and your unbiblical beliefs are keeping you in bondage to remain the old version of you. All lessons will either lay, or build upon, the foundation and core truths that shape your worldview and how you live. You will not only learn and understand the Christian life intellectually, you will come along for the ride and actually experience transformation.
DRIVE
It’s God’s heart, and the vision of my ministry, to mobilize disciples of Jesus to advance the Kingdom of God globally. No educational program would be complete without action steps for practical application. As one person said, to know, and not to do, is really not to know.
In ancient times, children out of grade school learned to either follow the trade of their parents or left home to apprentice and do on-the-job training under someone else. But in the modern education, much of the time students in school spend thousands of hours learning and memorizing facts, taking tests in subjects they will never have a career in. What a horrible waste of intelligence, emotion, time, energy, and money.
This harmful mindset has carried into the church as well. Too many believers are just spectators who keep learning but never do. We have not been given the option to just stay a learner. We are not to be hearers alone, but doers (Jam. 1:20). We are to be a disciple that make disciples! The Bible says that even when God raises up highly anointed, gifted leaders and elders to serve full time, it’s still not so that they can do all of the work. They have simply been given to help equip the rest of the saints to do the works of the ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12). That’s YOU!!!
Every lesson in this book is actionable. Some are more knowledge-based and others more action-based. But at the end of the day, I’m not teaching—I’m training! My goal is to help you discover, be prepared, be trained, and be mobilized to do whatever the Lord has called you to do.
Tips For Better Results
Before you get started—You could just read this like a book but there really is so much more available if you truly do treat it like a 30-day daily journey with Jesus. I hope you do want to get the most out of this journey!
YOUR HEART POSTURE MATTERS
If you’re just trying to check the religion box
on your to-do list, and you and God both know it, you’re not going to get much out of this time. If the reason you’re doing this is to prove to God, others, or yourself that you’re a good person, that is a bad reason. If you’re trying to help earn your salvation, or make up for sins you’ve committed by doing this, it won’t accomplish that. If you’re going to refer to this activity later as a reason why God owes you something that you want in return for what you did for Him, that’s also bad. God doesn’t owe you anything. You won’t get credit from Him or be spiritually blessed if you’re doing it for all the wrong reasons. Either come correct or don’t come at all!
That being said, if you sit down to do your devotional but notice that you have sinful, selfish desires on your mind, you can bring these to God, too. Before you even begin to read, just
