It was a day Bobby Campbell had waited weeks for. The first day of summer vacation and the first game his team was playing after school ended.
When he woke up that morning it was 78 degrees, rising rapidly and it was 87 degrees when he was getting ready to leave. The forecast was for close to 100 and it sure felt like it was coming soon.
The ballfield where he was playing today was in another part of town. Bobby’s Uncle Chris was driving him and his cousin Wayne, also a member of the team. Bobby was overjoyed, it was the beginning of summer vacation, and looked like it was off to an exciting start.
He was thrilled in a way only a nine-year-old could be. Quickly he gulped down his breakfast despite his mother’s admonition that he chew slower and not so much at a time.
But nothing else mattered at the moment. He wanted to have breakfast, don his uniform, and get going. The fact that his father couldn’t take him because Dad got a
