The Whispered Shadows of My Mind
Twisting and turning paths make their way through the emptiness. This place cannot be found on a map, and no one bothers to try and find it. I found my way here and now I am lost. This place is a world of my own creation, and I am locked inside. Most would find such a circumstance troublesome, but not me. The world ends up being a place where I nearly don’t belong. I cannot live in the world that most consider reality. The shadows mold and shift around me. They whisper in my mind eternally. Twisting and turning in an infinite series of corridors and alleys, this place spirals out around me.
Lost. I use that word, but considering that this is but a shadow of my mind, can that be true? No, not in reality. It is somewhere in the depths of my mind that brings to light the things I write. Deep inside the shadows of this mysterious place, there is a wellspring, and from it flows ideas and thoughts that cry out to exist and seen by the world. Is this hubris on my part? Is it egotism? Some would argue that the writer is the ultimate in egotism because their desire is to be seen and admired. The writer on the whole desires to touch someone’s heart in reality. It isn’t a desire for fame or fortune that drives us. It isn’t a matter of egotism or pride. There is magic in the words that we express, and poetry is that expression in its truest form. It is undiluted by dialogue, by excess explanations, or superfluous words.
I recently was told that poetry was a dead form of writing. This person told me that no one reads poetry anymore, and there’s no place for it in our technologically advanced world. Her thought was that it was old, stiff and boring. I disagree. I find poetry to be one of the most enduring forms of writing in existence. The reasoning is simple. There is no time frame in a poem. Some may reference an event or a story of a time, but unlike a novel, which has a
