It is necessary to write, if the days are not to
slip emptily by. How else, indeed, to clap
the net over the butterfly of the moment?
For the moment passes, it is forgotten; the
mood is gone; life itself is gone. That is
where the writer scores over his fellows: he
catches the changes of his mind on the hop.
– Vita Sackville-West
FOREWORD
Flat White, One Sugar is my second poetry collection. My first, The Cellist, a Bellydancer & Other Distractions (Ginninderra Press), was published in 2022.
Writing poetry is a way for me to explore the world around me and within me, to make sense of my experiences and emotions, and to connect with the universal human experience. It allows me to distil the complexities of life, to capture a moment in time, or a feeling that is difficult to express in any other way.
In this collection, the poems touch on a wide range of topics, from the beauty of nature to the difficulties of love, from the joys of childhood to the challenges of ageing.
I am very proud that my granddaughter, Natasha Sommer, a graduate of the National Art School, has illustrated Flat White, One Sugar.
