About this ebook
'Dominic Kirwan's latest collection of poetry, Spreading the Bad Word, is jaw-droppingly delicious, and I say that as someone who does not usually consider myself a fan of the genre. Like a lot of people, I thought of poetry as the realm of greeting cards and teenage girls, but this is some great, grown-up stuff. Kirwan is a master craf

Spreading the Bad Word - Dominic Kirwan
PART ONE
Unseize the Day
A haemorrhaging black heart,
Beating wildly, untamed, exploding
Splashing in puddles of children’s tears
Like a clap nappy jackhammer
All safety pins and yellow diarrhoea
Celebrating destruction
In the hands of a chiselled slave
Fuelled by alcohol,
Straitjackets and pharmaceuticals
Tearing reality’s concrete asunder
Blitzing out all reason
Bugged-out eyes and pregnant insects
Panicked by the teacup storm
Flying in manic circles
Smashing up against fly screens
And panes of murky glass
Repeatedly
Futility rattling like kryptonite
In a leaden jewellery box
Soulless eyes, windows screaming on display
Streaked with eye gunk, filth and desire
There is no escape from this room
A haemorrhaging mind
Raging to escape its soul cage
Trephination, lobotomy, vasectomy
Hands shaking as they wield the drill, the knife
Meant to set the demons free
A reckoning of death rattles like new wave LSD
There is no escape from this room
Pale parades on winding, bleached streets
An advertisement for anomalous sexuality
A product placement for earnt insanity
Window shopping was never this fulfilling
I am titillated by the Central Brisbane District wildlife
The animals, wielding smartphones, vegan snack foods
and retail therapy shopping bags
They have never seemed so beguiling
Beautiful women with strutting gorillas, sleeves tattooed
Fat, lard legions, mishappen pensioners,
the elderly, the wheelchair warriors,
the delightfully deformed
Drug addicts and lazy-eyed thugs in Target tracksuits
Bipolar saviours on manic marijuana,
and methamphetamine medication
All of them with God complexes
Just dying to pray over me, to save me
And bludge a cigarette I don’t possess
‘Got any loose change, mister?’ they ask.
‘Sorry. I don’t carry change. Nor am I going to change,’
‘you’re just going to have to love me the way I am,’ I reply.
I am married to a plethora of cancerous maladies
I am an invisible rock star
Taking on the world
With a drunken eye for the unseen
And a bottle of whisky in my hand
‘I’ll bring the bottle
And you bring the glasses
So you can see what hit ya!’
Jesus Lizards and Virginal Marys
Death Wish Kennedys and Public Housing Enemies
Santa Claus is the Devil
I am at the mercy of his presence
I am scheduled for my monthly exorcism
And a government needle
At the end of Death Valley
Buried beneath a mountain
Of writhing naked bodies
You will surely find the love
You have been searching for your whole life
Dig for it
Fuck your way to the bottom
It’s waiting there for you
So, Unseize the day, pilgrim
The time is nigh
For a miracle

‘But if you are looking for one,’ I began,

Of Joan of Arc’s frilly knickers
On fire
The room fills with smoke
The neighbour’s smoke alarm goes off
Nobody does anything about it
