The Lady and the General - C.S. Lewis

    The Falcom Operation

    Edward

Once the smoke had cleared; I saw the pirates and aimed for them from behind the uniformed officers. They fired, killing two men, as the rest managed to escape by rushing toward the end of the corridor.

The crew scattered like thrown decks of cards. The first team remained behind to keep the pirates busy. As general I led the second team to the back of the ship where they might have a chance for escape.

A group of officers dropped their weapons, and fled from the rest of the team, rushing into the escape pods located nearby.

"What are you doing? Are you men crazy? It’s too risky. I can’t afford to lose anyone else!" I snarled.

"Sorry, General, we’re not going to die with this ship. Who’s with me?" one of the men said.

The others hesitated at first, but slowly devotion drained from their unseen eyes, and they abandoned my side with great haste.

You’re making a mistake! I yelled but I couldn’t tell them anything they didn’t know. All I could do was try.

"All of you. You think they’re not stupid enough to underestimate such a move! They’ll never let you escape. Listen to me! We have to stick together."

Yet they didn’t listen and soon all I could do is watch each pod escape the ship’s bay, and plunged into the emptiness of space. For a moment it seemed the men might escape. Then the explosion flashed across my eyes as I moved to shield my face, lost to both loneliness and utmost despair.

NOOOO — But there was nothing I could do for them anymore. Slumping over, I idly gazed out the view ports as scattered fragments of metal spread across the galaxy. Instead, now all I could do, was take my place near the remaining team, just a few good men. I caught the gaze of dismay on her face. A pair of officers surrounded her, and she was staring over at me. Shakily I neared.

I’m sorry, Edward, she said, gazing up at me as tiny strands of her burning-red hair dropped over her pale cheeks. Was this beauty, was this reason itself, still safe from the monsters?

There’s no need. I tried to warn them, but they wouldn’t listen. There’s nothing anyone could have done. Despite all that, I still drooped, as if I were also out there in space.

She immediately embraced me. The chaos continued all around us as she tightly gripped a hold of me, trembling in my arms as she held on.

I’m so scared, Edward, she gently whispered into my ear. As she wept and held me tightly, she brushed her pink lips lightly across my neck. Pushing her back, I slowly lifted her chin up. Our eyes met for a moment as the tears rolled down between us.

"Don’t be. I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise," I assured her, curving a crooked lip. When her deep brown eyes sparkled up at me in response I nervously, pushed at the dark curls of my hair. Whenever I looked into her eyes, I felt overwhelmed and captivated by her beauty. However, I had to remind myself of my responsibilities.

And even if those eyes sparkled in wondrous clusters and flashes of light, and awakened a weakness I had to contain any desire for her. She could easily possess any man with her beauty. And as much as I didn’t want to, I had to consider she was in some cruel way the emperor’s trophy. The more I looked into those eyes, the greater the loss in my heart was. Just before I could lose myself, I steadied, tilting my head to keep from falling. It was only when I heard her speak, did I hear the shouting, and chaos all around. There was another explosion, muffling in other madness around us. The roar and insanity awakened the forgotten pain on my arm.

Blinking in confusion, it was only when a gentle hand awakened me from the trance that I reacted. It was her worried expression that revealed her concerned for me, in spite of the explosions nearby. Then a sudden sound in the distance caught my attention. The first team was racing in our direction. Realizing what was happening, I reached for the lady, grabbing her, and pulling her into an open escape pod doorway for cover. The explosion sent pieces of metal and smoke into the air. Half of the team was instantly killed.

When I peered out of the opening, I backed away suddenly as I realized
