    Tex - M.D. Stewart

    Dedication

To My Muse, who does all the actual work. I just write what My Muse tells me. And to the characters who live in my head, I hope telling their story makes the reader happy.

To my husband, thanks for sticking it out with me. Our marriage is solid, even if the world feels like quicksand.

To my small family. We’ve gotten smaller in 2023. Losing two important people has left me reeling and caused me to lose my desire to write.

That leaves me with one very important group...the readers.

Thank you for reading Tex. I hope you enjoy his and Vandie’s story.

    1-Tex

Inside the dimly lit underground room, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation. The air reeked of sweat and blood. The previous fighters who had fallen victim to the brutal tournament crowded the edges. Each bet on the outcome. Each man’s body was bruised, cut, and swollen. A testament to the savagery of the battles they’d fought. And lost.

The last two men standing were waiting for the signal to begin the final fight. The winner would be Mingo Blankenship’s new personal bodyguard. Not only would it grant access to Blankenship himself but also to his computers and security systems.

Tex had to win. No matter what.

His sole objective was to embed himself in Blankenship’s operation, a mission he was assigned to by his club. Years of experience in illegal street fighting competitions, and his time as the Vice President of the outlaw motorcycle club, the Black Daggers, made him perfect for the task. At one time, he had undergone training and competed in mixed martial arts.

Known as Seventy-One to the organizers of this contest, Tex kept his gaze locked on the man across from him. Clancy, a powerfully built man with an air of overconfidence, was called by the number Thirty-Two. He smirked as he flexed his bulging muscles, trying to intimidate Tex. Stupid waste of energy in Tex’s opinion.

A disembodied voice from above signaled for the fight to begin. The tension in the room grew.

Tex sprang forward with lightning-fast speed, aiming a thunderous punch at Clancy’s head. But Clancy, his reflexes as sharp as a predator, sidestepped the blow with a smug grin. Pain exploded on Tex’s side when Clancy countered with devastating hooks and a jab to his ribs. All the while, making snide remarks.

Tex was pissed at himself for underestimating how fast Clancy could be. He’d seen the guy fight before and should have known Clancy would move faster than his size should allow. The only thing that could excuse his stupidity was how beat he was after several days of fighting. There was no time to think about it now.

Quickly regaining his composure, he ducked under one of Clancy’s swings. Responding with a powerful right cross, Tex’s sore fist connected with Clancy’s jaw. The shock of the blow reverberated through Tex’s arm and body. His opponent staggered backward, his eyes momentarily unfocused.

That was something for Tex to remember, Clancy’s glass chin. You hit almost as hard as my seven-year-old niece, Seventy-one. The man spit a mouthful of blood to the floor.

Chaos erupted around them when Clancy quickly recovered. With a surprising burst of speed, Clancy lunged forward, his fist aiming for Tex’s face. His instincts, honed by his training, allowed Tex to evade the most damaging blows.

Beads of sweat ran in rivulets over his body. His arms ached, feeling heavy as lead. His legs were slower to respond, weighed down with fatigue. He dodged and weaved, and was able to land hard body shots. Clancy seemed unfazed at first, but Tex saw him slowing down too. Eventually, his opponent got lucky and Tex caught a punch to the side of his head.

Temporarily stunned, Tex was oblivious to the gut punch Clancy threw. The impact had him double over in pain. He struggled to regain his footing as Clancy mercilessly moved forward. Blow after blow landed on Tex’s battered body, each one testing the limits of his endurance. Each muscle cramped. His bones felt like they were shattering. He had to stop this onslaught. Tex couldn’t let Clancy win.

Give up yet, Seventy-One? Even out of breath, Clancy’s voice rang with confidence. Another weakness, Tex noted. Quickly thinking over the rules, such as they were, one risky strategy came to mind. Let him think he won. The fucker would get too arrogant for his own good. Tex had to time it just right or he might forfeit the contest if he stayed down too long.

When Tex dropped to a knee, the crowd momentarily grew quiet. Money changed hands when the tide turned in favor of Clancy winning the contest. Several men shouted encouragement to Tex as he caught his breath.

Clancy smiled, raised his arms above his head, and bounced from foot to foot. Tex had to hide his grin. Clancy was celebrating a victory. The asshole was shouting and started pounding his chest with one fist while using his other hand to egg on the cheers.

Determination raged through Tex. After a moment, he wiped the blood and sweat from his face and stood up. A roar rose from the former combatants.
