The Wolfman of Notting Hollow - CB Cheliah

    CHAPTER

    ONE

Cade Woodman stomped through the forest, fists clenched, breath steaming into the cold autumn air. Something big rustled in the trees ahead of him. Cade didn’t care. If it was a bear, he’d just as soon let it eat him. But the noise receded ahead of him. Whatever it was, he must have scared it off.

Cade wasn’t really paying attention to where he was going. Instead, his mind replayed the argument he’d had with his boyfriend as John shoved his hastily packed belongings into his car. Cade couldn’t think of much to say on the spur of the moment, so, he’d stormed off.

It wasn’t Cade’s fault. He was a quiet, pensive man. But now, tromping through the West Virginia pine forest high in the mountains, he could think of plenty of things to say. He’d say that maybe if John spent less time cruising Grindr and the porn sites, and a little more time paying attention to Cade, their sex life wouldn’t have died. He’d say that his silence came from being a pensive writer. He’d say that John only loved him for his boyish face and fit body anyway. He’d say…. Well, what did it matter now? John was gone, and Cade would never feel John’s soft lips on his again. Never sigh with pleasure when John dragged his stubbled chin across the nape of Cade’s neck, sending shivers down his spine. All that was gone.

Pine needles crunched under Cade’s boots. The trees closed in around him. And still he kept going, pushing branches out of his way with impatient hands, not allowing the forest to break his angry stride. Again, he replayed the scene back at his house, John’s cruel words. John loading the car. The whole time, traveling deeper and deeper into the vast forest of the Smoky Mountains.

As Cade’s anger cooled and his rational mind came back to the fore, he slowed his pace. Darkness crept into the corners of the sky visible through the pine boughs. Time to turn around. Except, which way was home? The thick and swollen clouds loomed with the promise of snow. Cade had left the house with only his parka. No hat. No gloves. No phone. Worst of all, as familiar as he was with the woods around his house, Cade didn’t recognize this place at all. The forest had a strange humpish quality, as if some secret were buried underneath.

A mad, desperate howl, long and low, echoed through the hills. Too deep for a wolf, and, wolves hadn’t been reintroduced here. But man, if it was a coyote, it was a really goddamned big one. Cade wasn’t easily spooked, but he didn’t want to meet whatever made that sound. Not without a rifle. He did his best to judge from what direction the call came, and headed the other way. Down. When in doubt, in these mountains, down was always the best choice. If nothing else, at least the weather would be milder. Usually, though, you could find a road after a while.

    The darkness closed
