Emma's Monster, A Bigfoot Story
The topographical maps laid out on the table were several years old. Brian had held onto them since planning this same trek with Naomi, his oldest daughter. That trip was sadly postponed when the girls’ mother took sick and passed, much too soon. Three grief-stricken years later, the maps were back out. Now sixteen years old, Naomi and her younger thirteen-year-old sister Emma were both excited to take the challenging journey. Eagerly, all three leaned over the kitchen table, inspecting the demanding terrain. It was their last chance to consider their trek’s route before hitting the road tomorrow.
Look how much wilderness there is out here,
Emma mentioned, sweeping her hand across a large portion of the map.
This brought back the fond memories of planning the first trip for Naomi.
Touching a point on the map, Naomi said, Here’s the trailhead we were going to start last time.
Moving her finger up between identified features, she said, We’ll stay here in Klamath Glen to get an early start.
Naomi leaned in closer, And here is Turwar Creek. We’ll follow it for a day before heading uphill to here.
Pointing out, for Emma’s sake, Over here are the Trees of Mystery. You were probably too young to remember when we went there.
I remember,
Emma defended. "That’s where Mom said she wanted to live . . . in the big trees."
Brian watched his daughters plot their upcoming backpacking expedition. They had been charting a path, computing miles and elevation changes, identifying potential waypoints, and remembering their mom. It had been a difficult couple of years, but he couldn’t have been prouder of his girls. They had shown strength beyond measure. Fortunately, he had always been close to his daughters, mainly through the girls’ aptitude for sports.
Naomi had played Little League baseball with the boys until she aged out. Now, she was a star on her high school softball team. Several colleges had already approached her. Brian thought she was as cool as they come, a fierce competitor while being all-girl at the same time—smart, pretty, funny, and clearheaded.
Naomi knew what she wanted and was sure about how to get there. Woe to the boy who tried to derail this young lady! As usual, she approached the upcoming trip as a test, a personal challenge to be conquered. Since her mother passed, Naomi has been strong while still relying on her little sister and her father. The bonds formed between them were solid and everlasting.
Emma was just as athletic, or maybe even more so. The difference was Emma really didn’t care whether she won or not. Brian was always amazed at how she would kill him on the tennis court and then spend the rest of the day celebrating his three good shots. Soccer was her game of choice, but her dad suspected it was only because more kids got to play, and everyone enjoyed running around.
At thirteen, the trip for Emma was all about fairies and elves. Looking at pictures of the northern Pacific Coast forests, she could imagine whole mystical communities hidden in the ferns and moss surrounding the big trees. She knew that if she only believed, they would undoubtedly show themselves. So Emma couldn’t wait to go deep into the redwoods and walk among the land of the giants.
Both girls loved their dad. He had been their rock through the toughest of times. Now, he was fulfilling his promise to take Naomi on her grand adventure. Naomi was Emma’s age when they first made these plans, and now Emma was old and strong enough
