Introduction
Growing up in Mormonism was full and eventful. My father had been Bishop more than once, and my mother was Relief Society President—all while raising us ten children while dad was working a full-time job. I was in Boy Scouts and attended early morning Seminary through the cold winters months in Colorado. I was not prone to missing Church and never missed a Sunday for the first 30 years of my life, so far as I can recall.
At university, I was vice president of the L.D.S.S.A. (student association) and took a full load of Institute of Religion classes on top of my already full load of classes at school. I served a mission promptly when I turned 19 and was one of the few who served an 18-month mission during the brief time that the Church experimented with shorter missions (normally 24 months). My mission preference was for England, but I was called to the Melbourne, Australia Mission.
On my mission, I had a different companion approximately every two months, and within that short period, I assisted in bringing in 3x the number of converts compared to that of a 24-month mission. In my last area, I was Zone Leader of the largest area in the mission of mainland Australia that spanned from Wagga Wagga on the east to Mildura on the west. The mission president at that time (President Robert K. Thomas) was so impressed by my success that he flew in a general authority (Elder Pinegar) to my location towards the outback to meet with me and to learn why I was so successful, that it might be incorporated Church-wide.

It was not until several years after my mission that I gained an appreciation for the things President and Sister Thomas had prophesied to me as a missionary. But before I share those prophecies, let me first give some background on the Thomases.

Some background information:
"Robert K. Thomas (1918—1998) was a professor of English at Brigham Young University (BYU) as well as the founder of BYU’s honors program and later the academic vice president of BYU.
"Thomas studied at Reed College in Oregon. It was here he saw the benefits of a small college with close interaction between students and faculty. Thomas went on to receive an M.A. from the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. in English from Columbia University. He joined the BYU faculty in 1951.
"After joining the BYU faculty, Thomas convinced Ernest L. Wilkinson and other administrators to form the honors program. When the honors program was formed in 1959, he was appointed its director. In 1963 Richard D. Poll was appointed the associate director to assist Thomas. In 1965 Richard L. Bushman became a second associate director. Thomas ended his term as head of BYU’s honors program in 1967 when he became academic vice president. Thomas retired from BYU in 1983. Among students who Thomas had a significant influence on while at BYU were John W. Welch, Allen E. Bergin, and Madison U. Sowell. The story of the BYU honors program and the role of Robert Thomas in founding it is recounted in detail by Kristine Hansen in A History of the Brigham Young University Honors Program: The First Fifty Years (BYU Press, 2012).
"Thomas was a literary critic. His article, published in 1972, A Literary Analysis of the Book of Mormon (published in a book edited by Charles D. Tate and Truman G. Madsen) was the first significant published work to engage in literary analysis of the Book of Mormon instead of debating its origins.
"Along with Bruce B. Clark Thomas, he co-authored the five-volume series, Out of the Best Books. He also wrote multiple articles that examined the literary qualities of the Book of Mormon.
