Description

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Third Sunday Throwback Sermon Series: Beginning in September, once a month, the ministers are selecting sermons from the historic ministers of All Souls and giving them new life by reworking them with their contemporary perspective for living in the 21st century. As All Souls approaches its 100th year, we will be offering a special “throwback” message at the Traditional service on the 3rd Sunday of each month. In the coming year, come hear the words of John Wolf, Brent Smith, Robert Sonen, Suzanne Meyers, Alfred Von Stilli, and other luminaries, who shepherded this religiously liberal church through some of the most significant events of the 20th century. Find out what they were saying then and what it means for us today. --------------------------------------------- On the third Sunday in September in 1955, Rev. Robert W. Sonen (All Souls Sr. Minster 1944-1959) delivered a powerful sermon from the All Souls pulpit titled, “The Foolish Wisdom of Faith”. Kicking off the new Third Sunday Throwback Sermon Series, I will deliver a version of his message updated with a contemporary perspective and my own thinking on the subject. Rev. Sonen is known as one of the best preachers who served as Senior Minister of All Souls. In this message he takes up the topic of faith and why we lose our faith and what kinds of faith we are smart to maintain. Even in 1955, the concept of faith was controversial in a Unitarian church. It was the same year that the first McDonalds was opened; Chuck Berry recorded his first song; Emit Till was murdered; Dwight Eisenhower was the president, and a few months later, in December, Rosa Parks was arrested on a bus in Montgomery.   SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:
