    Chapter 1

    Erica, you have a beautiful voice, I don’t know why you don’t do something with it!" My best friend in the whole world, Amanda, said. 

    You know perfectly well that I don’t have the time to do anything with it, and for the last time, it’s not really that special, I replied. 

    Erica, you have a gift, and one of these days I am going to send a tape of you belting out Mariah Carey in the shower to a huge record company. They will come to our apartment begging on their knees for- 

    For my signature on the x-ed line , stating that you have a recording contract, I finished the empty threat which held absolutely no meaning coming from the mouth of Amanda. I had heard the same exact record deal speech every morning since about the 7th grade when we first met at our lockers, which were conveniently next to each other. My mornings were incomplete if I didn’t hear that speech at least once. 

    Amanda, better known as Mandy, and I had been friends since the 7th grade when she asked me what books we needed for our history class. We had been friends ever since. 

    Now we share a huge apartment in New York City. The apartment was really a small house. We each had outside with a bedroom and a bathroom, but our living room, kitchen, and guest room are shared. I wrote feature columns for a major teen music magazine called Teen Rhythm and Mandy was the designer for sets and photo shoots for musicians who were being interviewed. Neither of us really had too much luck with guys. They used us and it never worked out. Mandy was really pretty and she modeled for some agency, but I never bothered to keep up with it.
