    Chapter 1

Okay, boys and girls, Mrs. Moran called as all the children filed off the bus outside the Porter Museum of Fine Arts. I need you to stay with your partners.

Sam yawned loudly as Mrs. Moran counted heads to make sure that none of her students had disappeared during the bus ride. When she got to twenty-two, she sighed with relief, for the moment at least.

Boys and girls, she repeated again attempting to get all eyes on her, "The Porter Museum of Fine Arts has some rules we need to be aware of. The first, most important, rule is, don’t touch the paintings."

Sam didn’t want to hear the rules, he just wanted to get moving. Sitting on the bus for thirty minutes had made his bottom numb.

Connor nudged him and mumbled, Wake up. Mrs. Moran will give you a warning if she thinks you’re not listening.

Sam nudged him back and they both began to giggle until Amelia leaned forward and hissed a loud, Shhhhh. I want to hear what the rules are.

Sam and Connor just glared at her but quieted down. Mrs. Moran was done with her lecture and the class started to march into the museum.

I can’t wait to see the Monet exhibit, Hunter said excitedly from beside Amelia. He’s a Prussian painter. I’ve never even been to Prussia.

Amelia just rolled her eyes at her friend. "He’s an Impressionist painter. He’s not from Prussia."

Hunter’s eyes got wide. Oh, okay. Well, I’ve never been there, either.

Connor snickered as he and Sam followed the two girls along the large hallway. "Impressionist is a kind of artist, not a place."

Hunter didn’t seem fazed by Connor’s comment. She simply chirped, Okay, and moved to stare at the next painting.

Connor and Sam meandered through the halls and around the large, ornately decorated rooms. Sam liked to draw but he preferred space ships and dragons, not these boring pictures of old people and fruit. But as they crossed one of the smaller rooms, Sam felt something move past his ear, like a whisper.

He turned toward Connor and asked, What did you say?

Connor looked at him like he was crazy and responded, I didn’t say anything.

Sam slowly rotated. He knew he had heard something but the room was almost empty of people. As his eyes skimmed the paintings on the walls, one piece of art seemed to beckon him. He stepped closer and felt the whisper again. His eyes were drawn to the imposing creation hanging in front of him.

On first glance it was simply a scene of a forest with a few mountains in the distance. As Sam looked closer, he could see a small castle poking out of the treetops. He didn’t know why he was so intrigued by this piece of artwork. It was just a dumb painting, wasn’t it?

Connor appeared at his shoulder and commented, "I’d rather be there climbing one of those trees than inside the exciting Porter Museum of Fine Arts." His voice dripped with sarcasm at the last few words.

Sam continued to edge closer to the painting, absorbing all the tiny little details. I’m not really sure I want to be there, Sam said hesitantly. He didn’t know why but a nervous feeling tickled inside him. Connor was now just as close as Sam, their noses almost touching the painting.

Connor reached up when he noticed the spires of the castle rising through the trees. Hey, there’s even a castle there. I wonder if it’s got a moat with vicious alligators in it or something.

Sam reached up to grab Connor’s hand. Don’t touch it, he warned.

Since when have you been such a rule follower? Connor scoffed and moved his hand closer.

You’re not supposed to touch the paintings, Amelia warned as she and Hunter skipped arm in arm over to the boys.

Yeah, Hunter scolded, "It’s the number one rule of the Porter Museum."

Amelia reached for Connor’s shoulder to move him back as Sam’s hand wrapped around Connor’s. Connor just smirked, Yeah, what’s gonna happen if I do? There’s no one around.

His hand touched the painting and he felt
