Spell Update
I don’t understand!
Kaiyi wailed, head falling onto the bar. It hit the wood with a thunk that made Appson wince. Kaiyi may have a thick skull for a human, but not that thick. He gently padded his friend's back with one of his claws.
"The model units worked perfectly, Kaiyi continued,
We tested the automatic tracing feature, the spell library, the voice activation. We tested it with all sorts of facial features too. Fangs. Snouts. Hoarse throats. The software would recognize any spell command, regardless of who spoke it."
It was good work,
Appson agreed. Very thorough.
Kaiyi ignored him to resume her wailing. We tested the software upload process too!
She picked up her head as the bartender placed down a refill of her Newton Newt. In three seconds, the highball glass was half empty.
The bartender raised an eye, inquiring about another, but Appson gave a fierce shake of his head. Can we get a basket of fries?
They'd have to return to the office sooner rather than later. Best to start carbing up.
The man nodded and headed toward the kitchen.
Kaiyi’s lament continued, unaware of anything but her misery. I don’t know what went wrong, but I just know I’m gonna get fired. Work was filled with nothing but complaints about witches not getting the update. They’ve been waiting a year for this and I blew it for the company. We have no idea what went wrong, why, how to fix it-
Kaiyi threw back the second half of her cocktail. The delivery of the update was on me. They’ll want to point fingers at someone. App, I’m gonna lose my job.
Sobbing, she let her head fall back to the bar.
Her phone bing!ed, as it had done every five minutes since they settled at the bar. She slid the device to Appson. "You’re the better spell engineer. Technology listens to you. Turn it off."
It could just be your mom-
Doubt it.
Appson delicately picked up the phone. The model had been designed for human hands, not his larger, clawed variety. He placed the phone on Kaiyi’s skin so her magic signature could unlock it. Then, he went searching for the mute setting.
The phone vibrated with an incoming message. A Circles conversation had 68 new messages. Appson winced. They’d only been at the bar thirty minutes but work never stopped. Especially when there was something to debug. Kaiyi's much-needed, non-office, whine time might have to be cut short.
Gritting his teeth, he opened the office app. It wasn’t the engineering channel, but a social one. He prepared to close out when a new message caught his eye: a news screenshot.
Appson tapped Kaiyi’s arm. They found out what went wrong.
Her head shot up, alcohol buzz fading away.
He tilted the device, showing off the photo.
ROOMBA SUMMONINGS the headline of a mundane news site read.
The humans’ Roombas updated instead of witches’ Broombas.
Ohmygod.
She grabbed her phone, bringing it up to her eye. She had to squint to read. Do you think I’m still going to get fired?
You’re not going to get fired,
Appson sighed. "It’s an honest mistake. And who knows, PR might be able to ride this out. We love making fun
