HIPPOCRATIC OATH AS TRANSLATED BY AMELIA ARENAS
A Doctor’s Touch
The last place I expected to see Camron Coinin was on my front stoop. Let alone at three AM holding a bloody wound. Though lucky for him he stumbled to my abode. I didn’t sleep. Hadn’t for a century. Camron gurgled his words, struggling to stay upright. Shirtless, I could see his chest hair was matted with blood, as were his jeans. He held onto his right side. Stepping out of my house meant possibly running into whatever had attacked him. I was sure the Hippocratic oath didn’t demand doctors put themselves at risk before a patient.
But I stepped outside. I wrapped one of his massive arms around my shoulder and then struggled to hold onto his waist. Not only was he slippery with blood but Camron was one of those men that was big all over. Big shoulders, big stomach, big head… We made it a few steps into my cabin before Camron fell to his knee, taking me with him. Blood dripped onto the linoleum floor of my kitchen.
I’m calling the office,
I told him. There weren’t any ambulances in our little town hidden in the woods. If there was something dire our clinic couldn’t handle, the best bet for a patient’s survival was an airlift. Dramatic? Yes. But when it would take two hours for an ambulance to even reach the edge of the woods, what else were we supposed to do? Dramatic was better than dead.
I stood only halfway up before Camron grabbed my wrist with a strength I didn’t expect from a man bleeding out. Don’t—
he coughed. Don’t call nobody…
My eyes went wide but that had little to do with Camron’s words. I could see them now, his claws wrapped around my arm. Black and curved and sharp as hell. As Camron struggled to breathe I peered into his mouth and saw his elongated canines. I looked up, the curtains on my kitchen window open to the night. The full moon peered past some clouds.
Camron,
I spoke sternly, having accepted that I was now on the clock. Camron, stay with me, I need to ask you some questions.
I got shot.
Shit,
I cursed, already failing to be the cool-headed person in the room. Stay here.
I rushed to the closet to grab my emergency kit. It was much heftier than the average first aid kit you could get anyplace. Rural medicine required a lot of work outside the office space. Some, most I’d dare to say, found the lack of resources stressful. I found it familiar. A return to a time before penicillin or even peroxide.
I returned to Camron’s side, reaching for his neck to check his pulse, obvious tachycardia. At least his breathing was still slow. Camron’s one hand still clung to his wound. I need to examine the injury,
I told him. I reached for his hand to move it aside, only to find he had dug his claws into his flesh, like a panicked cat clinging to its owner. Damn it,
I breathed. I started to pull his claws out one digit at a time till finally I could get at the injury.
Camron muttered, I got shot…
I huffed, happy
