About this ebook

The story begins with Jason and Vera. A young witch and warlock with an insatiable appetite for folly. Together they wisk away their victims while satisfying themselves, all through the night.

Next is the story of Victor, a young Vampire whose long-lost girlfriend returns to haunt him, and his brethren, as they continue to survive undetected by the human world.

After that is a dish of candy. Taffy is known to make people disappear and Gavin likes keeping his enemies at bay. Together they hatch a plan to get rid of those adversaries he rather not tolerate.

Those and the following stories are the tales of the Humble Warlock. An ancient soul, he watches over the Earth, as he assimilates the worst, while he gains insight into the woes of mankind.

Omar Daniels has spent most of his life in and around Chicago, Illinois. For the better part of two decades, he’s worked mostly in the construction and repair trades. He’s written a few novels, a few short stories, and a tiny variety of screenplays. All of his works dwell within the realms of Crime, Sci-Fi, and Horror. His protagonists are usually do-gooders who’ve been pulled off course or sucked in due to a grander scheme. Every now and then, a Comedy magically appears before his eyes.Over the years, he’s lent his distinctive vision to the darker divisions of Hip Hop music, thriving in the culture’s shadows where he’s most comfortable.Omar likes food most of all, beer, computers, TV, media of all kinds, and of course books and good writing. He has an Associate's of Applied Science Degree in Electronics from DeVry University, formerly DeVry Institue of Technology, Chicago Campus. He uses his vast knowledge of electronics and the Internet to weave together his stories. He's a known techno-geek around the way even though he's way too old for such associations. Spending most of his time writing, lately, he'll sometimes whip up a pretty tasty egg sandwich to keep him going. It's safe to call him a junk-food junkie while in his presence.Full versions of all my books can be found in many online bookstores. For more about me visit https://bookmotives.com

    Volume One

The Girl with the Very Small Birthmark

    Part 1

    VERA

Vera always liked her tattoo. Her mom insisted that it was not a tattoo and only a birthmark. She always insisted and maintained it was a birthmark, although not always to great length. She cared for her daughter not to be scared, but it was only a birthmark, a simple embellishment, and nothing more. So, she thought.

No one they knew could make heads or tails of it. The similarity it had to a cross was one of those things adults learn to ignore or overlook, never coming close to making the connection that they should.

She’s just a baby. Her mother would say.

If there ever was such a thing, Daddy left soon after Vera’s birth. He left mainly because of Mommy’s incessant drinking, although she was told that Mommy’s abhorrent and persistent rage drove him away. The tattoo was just a little jaunt. A little extra handcrafted, it seemed, by the Lord himself. Just the little push Daddy needed, so he could run and be gone from their place forever.

Surprisingly or not, depending on what time zone you lived in, Vera didn’t miss her Daddy very much. And, of course, neither did Mommy. The two got along just fine by themselves. According to her mother, Vera was the Godsend she had always prayed for. She could care less about having a man or a husband, which seemed seem that way to her and others. Since she became very fortunate shortly after her husband left, some had to wonder if his disappearance could even be considered an omen, especially since the two were blessed beyond belief financially.

The local lottery was the means to their escalation for those who weren’t pre-disposed to demonology. It’s why Vera’s mother quit her shitty job and never worked again. Feeling as right and as just as the most high, she chose to keep herself close, at least in appearance, to the most-high. Therefore, she decided to drink, and drink, and drink, and drink, and nothing more.

When she wasn’t too drunk, she was either tending to Vera or her habit, making herself an early-morning regular at the liquor store, where she found herself most welcome amongst her fellow practitioners.

Despite that, the situation didn’t seem to bother Vera. The neighbors did find it a little strange how well adapted she was to her life as a child considering what a mess her mother’s life was. How she maintained an A average throughout her school years was an almost urban legend, and how she accomplished it with only the handful of friends she had, was even more confusing. Even her friends found it a little perplexing once they took a moment to dwell upon it.

One of those friends, who wasn’t so confused or disturbed by Vera’s good fortune, was a boy named Jason. A boy indeed, he was a very shrewd young soul to be so close to maturity. Although most folks would consider him merely a nerd and leave it at that, Jason thought of himself as a bit queer. He, therefore, developed a habit of harassing any young lady that would suit his desires, even if the love was not reciprocated. Still, at 17 years old, a little man peaked through most young buds.

Luckily for him, Vera knew who he was, and as strange as it sounded, he also knew who she was. Although not bound by family ties, they shared a kinship and a mutual trust. They took a liking to each other very quickly and early and had been friends through childhood.

Vera’s mother died young, while Vera was 17, leaving her with a very hefty inheritance. She never mentioned the many strange and disturbing incidents her child was involved in, even to her death.

There was no mention of the dead animals that would show up at their door, always during a full moon. Never mauled or damaged, they seemed to crawl up to their door and die.

The gifts from people she didn’t know were strange, though not as disheartening as the dead animals. They were usually things her mother needed, and she was grateful at least not to have to go without them. And not having to ask in advance was good enough for her.

Then there was the time the maintenance man, Johnny, was run over in front of the building. They never caught the driver, either. People say some Mafia or another wanted him. Others said he walked in front of a moving vehicle. He, in particular, had a lot of nasty and filthy things to say about Vera.

Everyone else adored and admired Vera no matter what wrong she did. It was as if Vera was casting a spell surrounding her mother and all who came in contact with them. Leaving everyone mystified and enchanted no matter how ugly the circumstances.

And then, the boy, Jason. Her mother was sure they were having sex together, although she could never catch them in the act. She would either awaken after the event or be too hungover to care.

After Vera’s mother died, she a Jason left their small town. They rented out a medium-sized place within city limits, so they could do what they do and practice the craft specifically meant for them. A young witch and warlock tied together as friends and lovers. They were in love with their world, and all that was to be had.

    THE HUNT

    So… Vera said.

She would always lead off one of their adventures this way. Jason always knew what she would ask, even before she finished the sentence.

… whom should we pick? she said.

Whomever you like, of course. Jason said, The bigger the challenge, the greater the reward, as you know.

Yes, and we both know how you like to spend your money, she said.

Well, I do like to indulge just as you do, he said.

Guess we’re destined to be brats our entire lives, huh? Vera said.

I’m pretty sure I don’t have to answer that one. You know as well as I who we both are or do you need a reminder? Jason said.

And she did know who they were. Vera and Jason both knew intimately within themselves who they both were. They knew it as intimately as they knew each other. It was within them through and through; they have clung to their power and each other since they met as children. Some would say their relationship extended before birth, and they both came to this world knowing they would find each other and remain together forever.

    How about him? she asked.

Standing on the corner was a young average-sized male who couldn’t have been more than 22 years old. He dressed in the new way, sporting a silk button-up and what would be skin-tight white jeans if his legs were not toothpicks.

It’s your turn, Vera. Jason said, I’ll leave it up to you.

With that, Vera and Jason separated from each other.

Jason turned down an alley as Vera continued to walk forward, heading toward their target. He was a tourist and probably waiting for a family member or friend to meet up with. He was standing on the corner,
