Introduction
One of my favorite places to be is a dingy coffee shop! Weird? That is because I learnt some of the most valuable entrepreneurial lessons in the most unlikely place; a dreary coffee shop.
It was not a place where I expected to find inspiration. It was a rundown place, with stained walls, chipped mugs, and a sour smell. The only reason I went there was because it was cheap and close to my office. I was a junior accountant at a big firm, and I hated my job. I felt like I was wasting my life doing boring tasks for people who didn't care about me. I dreamed of starting my own business, but I didn't have the courage or the resources to do it.
One day, as I was sipping my lukewarm coffee, I noticed a man sitting at the corner table. He was wearing a leather jacket, sunglasses, and a bandana. He had a laptop, a smartphone, and a stack of papers in front of him. He looked busy, but also relaxed. He smiled and nodded at me when our eyes met. I was intrigued by him. Who was he? What was he doing? Why was he here?
I decided to approach him and strike up a conversation. I introduced myself and naively asked him what he was working on. He told me his name was Sam, and he was a rebel entrepreneur. Rebel Entrepreneur? What profession was that? I asked inwardly. He said he was disrupting
the industry of online education by creating a platform that connected learners and teachers from all over the world. He said he was launching his product in a few weeks, and he was confident it would be a success. He said he had no investors, no employees, and no office. He said he worked from anywhere he wanted, and he loved his life.
I was amazed by his story. I asked him how he did it. How did he come up with his idea? How did he build his product? How did he market it? How did he deal with the competition? He answered all my questions with enthusiasm and passion. He told me he followed a simple philosophy: be a rebel. He said he challenged the traditional norms of business and did things his own way. He said he was not afraid to take risks, experiment, fail, learn, and improve. He said he was not interested in following the rules, but in making his own. He said he was not motivated by money, but by impact. He said he was not a follower, but a leader.
He inspired me to rethink my own approach to business and life. He made me realize that I had the potential to be a rebel entrepreneur too. He encouraged me to pursue my own dreams and passions, and to create something that mattered to me and others. He offered me his help and guidance, and invited me to join his network of rebel entrepreneurs. He gave me his contact details and told me to keep in touch. He said he had to go, but he hoped to see me again soon. He left me with a smile and a handshake.
That was the day that changed my life. That was the day I met the rebel entrepreneur. That was the day I became one.
