Prologue
The beautiful woman in the kitchen smiled at me, tucking her hair behind her ear. I’d never met anyone like her in all my life, and I still didn’t know how the hell she was mine. But she was. She chopped the vegetables to add to the stir-fry she’d been prepping for lunch.
Stop staring,
she said.
Can’t help it. When I see something gorgeous, I just have to look.
She huffed at me. When you say things like that, it makes me want to put blinders on you.
Why?
So you can’t look at other pretty women.
I grinned and moved closer, placing my hand on her hip. Our daughter cried from the next room, and I pulled away. China reached out to wrap her fingers around my wrist.
I can get her,
I said.
I know, but you spoil her. Let her cry another minute. If she won’t stop, then you can go get her.
I didn’t know shit about raising kids. What I did know was that my daughter was the most beautiful baby ever. She had red hair like mine, blue eyes, and looked like a miniature version of her mother. China insisted her blue eyes would change color as she got older. Something about all babies having blue eyes. I’d never heard of such a thing and had no idea if it was true or not.
Fine. How long do I have to wait? A full minute? Or can I go now?
She rolled her eyes at me. Go. I know I can’t hold you back. It’s like wrestling a bear.
I flashed her a smile and hurried off to our daughter’s room. I’d gotten them this small two-bedroom house so we’d have a place to be together as a family. The last thing I wanted was for my club to find out about China or Meiling. The Devil’s Fury wasn’t the right place for them. I had no doubt our asshole of a president would want to initiate China, and I was never going to let that happen.
I lifted my baby girl from her crib and held her against my chest. Her cries immediately stopped as she snuggled into me. My precious little angel! Carrying her back to the kitchen, I sat at the table with her while China finished making lunch.
I have a job I need to do soon,
I said. Might mean I’m gone for a few days.
Honestly, it wasn’t a job out of town, but if I didn’t stick to the clubhouse for a night or two, my club would get suspicious. The thought of fucking other women sickened me. China was my one and only, but I couldn’t keep her safe if I didn’t play a certain role. I’d let the whores suck me off and pretended to take them somewhere to fuck them. Usually I got them off with my fingers and made sure they were happy enough to keep their mouths shut about how little I did with them.
Until her, cheating wouldn’t have bothered me. Hell, I hadn’t had a woman before China. The club pussy had always been enough. I hadn’t seen the point in settling down. Now I had a woman and daughter I wanted to protect. Only reason I hadn’t married China was so my club wouldn’t find her. I didn’t want too big of a paper trail linking the two of us together. I’d even given her the cash to pay for this place so it wouldn’t be in my name.
She didn’t say anything to my comment, but I noticed the slight tension in her body. She knew what it meant when I wasn’t here, and I knew she hated it. Hell, I did too, but there was no walking away from the Devil’s Fury. Only way out was to die. Or be stripped of my colors, which was pretty much the same thing. They’d do their best to kill me if it came to that.
I kissed Meiling’s cheek. Daddy has to go somewhere for a bit, but I’ll hurry back as soon as I can. Will you miss me?
She waved a chubby fist in the air and I smiled down at her. Never in my life had I seen anything more precious.
You know we always miss you,
China said. She finished cooking our food and set the plates on the table. I’d become a pro at eating with one hand while holding our daughter. I got to spend so little time here, I always held on to her as much as I could during my visits. In a perfect world, we’d spend every day together.
I’d change things if I could,
I said. I’ve told you what the club is like. It’s no place for either of you. This is safer.
She nodded. I know. It doesn’t mean I have to like it.
China, I love you. Both of you mean everything to me. Give me some time. I’ll try to come up with a better solution, but for now, this is it.
She sighed and started to eat. I hated seeing the sadness in her eyes. I wanted to take all her pain away, not cause her more.
After we ate, I handed Meiling off to China and kissed them both. I have to go.
I know. Please be safe, Robert.
She was the only one who called me by my real name. To everyone else, I was Blades. It always warmed my heart to hear my name on her lips, especially with her accent. I loved listening to her speak. Hell, I just loved everything about her.
I went outside and walked two blocks to my bike. Pulling my cut from my saddlebags, I put it on and started up the engine. Time to go back to reality and leave my slice of heaven behind. Another few days, and we could be together again.
The Pres was waiting for me at the clubhouse when I pulled up. I hadn’t even had a chance to get off my bike before cops were pulling in, surrounding me. I eyed the Pres, wondering what the hell was going on.
Nothing I can do about this, Blades. You either go with them, or they’re going to tear this place apart.
Shit. I had a feeling this was going to delay me getting back to my girls. But the Pres wanted me to turn myself over to the police for some reason, so I’d do it. One of them approached with cuffs in his hands.
Robert Young, you’re under arrest for the murders of…
Everything sounded like static after those words. Murder? Who the fuck had I killed? I eyed the Pres, who remained silent. His eyes said for me to go along with it. I didn’t know what the hell was happening, but I didn’t have a choice. He wanted me to protect the club, and I needed to keep my girls out of his sight.
The officer cuffed me and shoved me into the back of a squad car. As they drove off, I had a bad feeling. One that festered as the days passed. By the time my court date came around, I felt numb inside. My club had clearly abandoned me, and my woman and daughter had no idea what was going on. Although, it was possible she’d seen something on the news.
The judge sentencing me to life in prison for multiple counts of murder hit me like a sledgehammer. My life was over. No more China. No more Meiling. At this point, I wasn’t too broken up over not seeing my club again. They were my brothers, but I had something more important in my life now. A family. My true family.
If I’d known what would happen, I’d have fought harder.
Chapter One
Blades -- Eighteen Years Later
I eyed the man in front of me. It had been a long ass time since I’d seen the Devil’s Fury cut. So, one of you finally came to see me. No one’s ever brought a pretty woman with them, though.
