Soares, São Paulo, Sundermann, 2016], este ensaio enfatiza os preparativos sistemáticos que lançaram as bases para a expulsão em 1948 de mais de 750.000 palestinos do território do recém criado Estado de Israel. Enquanto esboça o contexto e os desenvolvimentos diplomáticos e políticos do período, o artigo destaca em particular o projeto plurianual «Arquivos da Aldeia» (1940-47), envolvendo a compilação sistemática de mapas e informação secreta para cada aldeia árabe, além da elaboração – sob a direcção de um «comité» interno com menos de uma dúzia de homens, liderado por David Ben-Gurion – de uma série de planos militares que culminam no Plano Dalet, segundo o qual a guerra de 1948 foi travada. O artigo termina com a declaração de um dos objetivos subjacentes do autor ao escrever o livro: defender um paradigma de limpeza étnica para substituir o paradigma da guerra como base para a investigação académica e o debate público sobre 1948.

Numa tarde fria de quarta-feira, dia 10 de março de 1948, um grupo de onze homens, líderes sionistas veteranos, juntamente com jovens oficiais militares judeus, deram os últimos retoques num plano para a limpeza étnica da Palestina.¹ Nessa mesma noite, foram emitidas ordens militares a unidades no terreno para preparar a expulsão sistemática dos palestinos de vastas áreas do país.² As ordens chegaram com uma descrição detalhada dos métodos a utilizar para expulsar à força as pessoas: intimidação em grande escala; cerco e bombardeamento de aldeias e centros populacionais; incendiar casas, propriedades e bens; expulsar residentes; demolir casas; e, finalmente, plantar minas nos escombros para impedir o regresso dos habitantes expulsos. Cada unidade recebeu a sua própria lista de aldeias e bairros a visar, de acordo com o plano diretor. Com o nome de código Plano D (Dalet, em hebraico), esta foi a quarta e última versão dos planos mais vagos, delineando o destino que estava reservado à população nativa da Palestina.³ Os três planos anteriores articulavam apenas obscuramente o modo como a liderança sionista tencionava lidar com a presença de tantos palestinos nas terras que o movimento nacional judeu queria para si próprio. Este quarto e último plano explicitava-o, clara e inequivocamente: os palestinos tinham de partir.
O plano, que abrangia tanto as zonas rurais como urbanas da Palestina, foi o resultado inevitável tanto do impulso ideológico do sionismo apostado numa presença exclusivamente judaica na Palestina, como uma resposta aos desenvolvimentos no terreno na sequência da decisão britânica, em fevereiro de 1947, de terminar o seu Mandato no país e de entregar o problema às Nações Unidas. Os confrontos com as milícias palestinas locais, especialmente depois da resolução de partição por parte da ONU em novembro de 1947, forneceram o contexto perfeito e o pretexto para implementar a visão ideológica de uma Palestina etnicamente limpa.
