    Foreword

    It is my absolute pleasure to write the foreword for Professor Dr.

    Samuel Jacobs-Abbey’s newest book, MASTERING ADVERSITY: STRATEGIES IN OVERCOMING LIFE’S CHALLENGES.  I have the good fortune of knowing Samuel over many years and have observed his growth from a humble yet ambitious young Ghanaian to a well-recognized leader in the USA in the field of human development, human rights, and an effective administrator of major projects, often connected to various departments in the United Nations.

    Sammy’s determination is further illustrated by his fostering the establishment of the Jacobs-Abbey Global Institute for Leadership Studies which enrolls hundreds of students every year. Reading this recent book, one is grateful for Sammy’s brilliance of his methodical, well notated logical processes and reasons for embracing Change Theory. Each chapter leads from a focus on how one overcomes adversity to how to embrace success with a full understanding of the necessary sequenced processes.

    We are human beings with an assortment of different life experiences that shape our attitudes and emotions. Each step we take in the ladder of our individual and collective future is influenced by one’s personal approach to life. This can be examined not only by self-reflection but also by dissecting an expected challenge leading us into formidable steps along the way. The components consisting of what we call challenges and even crises, are truly gifts for our growth and maturity affording us the ability to increase our capabilities and focus them in a direction we would prefer for our own lifestyle.

    Sammy does not make a person right or wrong but rather asks the reader to go deep with him into understanding the self as an agent of Change. This begins internally with acceptance and motivation for dignity and accomplishments. Even a mis-take means taking a false turn that can be rectified as an opportunity to alter one’s course without painful self-negation, taking a new direction. The motto is Never give up, rather, examine your behavior and work with all your strength and motivation towards the outcome. Perseverance, persistence and redirection win the day, yes, turning defeat into VICTORY.

    This book is inspiring as it captures the strong faith in the human being that we are able to construct a life of meaning and have success. Success not only reflects financial stability but also indicates goal setting and resulting accomplishments. It is also indicated and especially stressed in his book the important key: to create success means serving the general public or another individual.

    Sammy helps us understand the necessary processes by illustrating vignettes of renowned people as he analyzes their various behaviors so we may see and know and thus replicate. The most impressive examples are the references in the Bible, using the parables as a tool for showing us that the problems we face and wish to overcome are applicable not only in the biblical stories we know so well but in daily living with real life problems that occur all the time.

    The Bible shows us very clearly that we must learn to focus on solutions not the problems. Within the framing of our solutions we can create a plan resulting in strategizing goals we wish to attain for ourselves. I am deeply moved by this strand of knowingness. Finally, these parables show us what we are able to do as Jesus has said, You too can do this and more.

    This book is a MUST for those who wish to push forward to explore the laws of the power of resilience, the importance of mindset and the strategies and tools that can help you overcome life’s challenges.

    Life is full of challenges. No matter who you are or where you come from, you are bound to face adversity at some point in your life. Whether it is a personal setback, a professional obstacle or a societal challenge, the way we respond to adversity can make all the difference in the world.

    It is this idea that inspired us to write this book, Mastering Adversity: Strategies in Overcoming Life’s Challenges. We wanted to create a resource that could help individuals, business gurus and anyone facing adversity to overcome their challenges and emerge stronger and victorious.

    Through our research, we discovered that there are certain strategies and tools that can help individuals overcome adversity and build resilience. These strategies include developing a growth mindset, seeking support and guidance, taking calculated risks and learning from setbacks.

    We also found that there is much to be learned from the experiences of others. The stories of individuals who have overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges can provide inspiration and guidance for those facing their own challenges.

    In this book, we have drawn from real-life stories of individuals, business gurus and biblical characters who have faced adversity and emerged stronger and victorious. We have also provided practical advice and strategies for building resilience, adopting a growth mindset and turning setbacks into opportunities for growth and learning.

    Our hope is that; this book will serve as a valuable resource for anyone facing adversity. Whether you are seeking guidance for a personal challenge, a professional obstacle or a societal issue, we believe that the strategies and stories shared in this book can help you overcome your challenges and emerge stronger and victorious.

It is a dynamic and iterative process that requires constant evaluation, adjustment and optimization to ensure that the organization stays on track and adapts to changing circumstances.

    At its core, management strategy is about making choices. It involves a clear understanding of the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and how these factors impact its ability to achieve its objectives. A well-designed management strategy helps an organization allocate its resources effectively, optimize its operations and identify opportunities for growth.

    Professional Strategy

    Professional strategy refers to the set of actions and plans that an individual undertakes to achieve their professional goals. It involves a deliberate approach to career development that focuses on building and leveraging skills, experience and networks to advance one’s career.

    At the heart of professional strategy is a clear understanding of one’s career goals and how to achieve them. This requires a deep awareness of one’s strengths, weaknesses, values, and interests. A professional strategy begins by defining what success means to the individual and identifying the milestones that need to be achieved to reach that definition of success.

    Once the individual has identified their career goals and milestones, they can begin to develop a plan of action. This plan should include specific steps to take to achieve each milestone and should be adaptable to changing circumstances. A professional strategy should also involve regular assessments of progress and the identification of potential obstacles that may arise along the way.

    A key component of professional strategy is building a strong network of professional contacts. This involves developing relationships with colleagues, mentors and other professionals in one’s industry or field.     Tactical strategies can take many forms, including adjustments to staffing levels, changes in production schedules, targeted marketing campaigns or targeted training programs for employees. The key feature of tactical strategies is that they are designed to be implemented quickly and effectively in response to changing circumstances or emerging opportunities.

    An effective tactical strategy requires a clear understanding of the organization’s overall goals as well as the resources and capabilities available to achieve those goals. It also requires a clear understanding of the external environment in which the organization operates, including market trends, regulatory requirements and other factors that may impact the organization’s ability to achieve its goals.

    Tactical strategies are often developed in consultation with front-line employees who have a unique perspective on the day-to-day challenges and opportunities that the organization faces. This collaboration ensures that tactical strategies are grounded in practical realities and that they are more likely to be effective in achieving their objectives.

    Personal Strategy

    Personal strategy refers to the deliberate and intentional planning and execution of actions towards achieving personal goals and objectives. It is a roadmap for achieving individual success and fulfillment by setting clear objectives, identifying strengths and weaknesses and creating a plan for self-improvement.

    Personal strategy is important because it helps individuals to take control of their lives and chart a course towards achieving their aspirations. It provides a framework for setting and achieving goals and helps individuals to prioritize their time and resources towards activities that are aligned with their values and long-term aspirations.

    The first step in developing a personal strategy is to identify personal goals and objectives. These could be related to career advancement, personal growth and development, financial success or any other area of life that is important to the individual. Goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART), to ensure that they are achievable and provide a clear direction for action.

    The next step in personal strategy is to assess personal strengths and weaknesses. This involves a critical evaluation of personal skills, experiences and knowledge, as well as an assessment of areas that need improvement. This self-awareness helps individuals to identify areas where they need to focus their attention and energy and develop strategies to overcome personal challenges.

    After identifying personal goals and strengths, the next step is to create a plan of action. This involves setting specific milestones, identifying necessary resources and developing a timeline for achieving personal goals. The plan should be flexible and adaptable, allowing for adjustments and modifications as necessary.

    Execution is the final step in personal strategy. This involves taking deliberate action towards achieving personal goals and objectives by implementing the plan developed earlier. This includes taking concrete steps, overcoming obstacles and persisting through setbacks and challenges. It is also important to periodically review progress towards personal goals and adjust the plan if necessary.

    Spiritual Strategy

    Spiritual strategy can be defined as a set of plans and actions that individuals undertake to enhance their spiritual growth and connection to a higher power or divine being. It involves the conscious and intentional effort to align one’s life with their beliefs, values, and purpose in a way that promotes inner peace, well-being and fulfillment.

    At the core of spiritual strategy is the recognition that life is not just a physical experience but also a spiritual one and that there is a higher purpose and meaning to our existence. It involves seeking answers to life’s big questions such as Who am I? Why am I here? and What is my purpose in life? It also involves developing a personal relationship with a higher power or divine being, which could be God, the universe, nature or any other spiritual entity that one believes in.

    Spiritual strategy can take many forms, depending on an individual’s beliefs and practices. For some, it may involve engaging in religious practices such as prayer, meditation, worship or attending religious services. For others, it may involve practicing mindfulness, yoga or other forms of self-reflection and contemplation. It may also involve connecting with nature, volunteering, serving others or engaging in acts of kindness and compassion.

    The benefits of spiritual strategy are numerous. It can help individuals find meaning and purpose in life, overcome challenges and adversity, improve relationships, reduce stress and anxiety and cultivate a sense of inner peace and well-being. It can also provide a sense of guidance and direction, helping individuals navigate life’s uncertainties and challenges with greater clarity, confidence and resilience.

This chapter explores the strategies and mindset shifts that individuals can use to move from surviving to thriving and to take control of their lives and achieve their dreams.

    The survival mindset is one that is focused on getting by, rather than thriving. It is a mindset that accepts our circumstances as they are, without any expectation of improvement or change. It can be a useful mindset in times of crisis or extreme difficulty, as it helps us to focus on the essentials and prioritize our needs. However, when we remain in a survival mindset for too long, we can become trapped in a cycle of just getting by, without ever moving forward.
