Origin - A YA Superhero Short Story - Matthew Kreke

    Chapter 1 - The Trial

His entire career had brought Doctor Johnathon Stone to this very moment. Gila Pharmaceuticals would soon begin human trials for a radical new medical treatment: 3D-printed gene addition. The medical potential was endless! This miracle machine had already made history by reprogramming apple seeds to sprout and survive in a desert climate. Today, the FDA had authorized human trials. Forget designer babies, Gila would be making designer adults! He could already see a future where his invention would allow humans to live on other planets without needing to wear helmets to breathe and everyone would remember it started with five seeds from a genetically altered apple tree.

Julie? Dr. Stone spoke into a microphone. Please come to the office.

Julie Jane, the head nurse, had been with Gila since before Dr. Stone’s project had even been proposed. She had always been one of his greatest champions. Even when the board wanted to cancel his research due to mediocre results, she stuck by him and his strange contraption. Yes, if it were not for her, they would have canceled the project months before the apple tree breakthrough.
