    Dedication

It was a sunny day in June 1979 and my fifth grade graduation. I was dressed in a blue suit my mother had bought just for the special occasion. I walked across the stage several times to receive different awards and certificates for academics and the creative arts. To me, it was no big deal because I liked school and I loved art. But my mom and grandmom  kept smothering me with hugs and kisses and kept pulling out that polaroid camera. It made me feel special. It was a defining moment in my life, when I began to see myself as talented and smart. My mother was always at the PTA meetings and my art awards. And my grandmother always checked me when my behavior got out of hand. They both stressed the importance of education. So without them, this book definitely would not have been possible.

    ––––––––

So it's with a great deal of love and appreciation that I  dedicate this book to Flossie Thomas ( mother) and the late Emma Simmons ( grandmother and real life Nan-Nan). Also their unconditional love and how they carried themselves as women; gave me a healthy love and respect for all women, a theme throughout this book.

    Part I

The Dream and My Dream Interpreter

    Chapter I

My name is Langston Jamal Evans. Yes, named after the

great writer Langston Hughes. I guess my parents could  foresee  the future, because I grew up loving books and eventually became a librarian. This amazing journey I'm about to share all started with one hell of a dream. I work at the Camden County public library in Camden N.J. , so I'm daily surrounded by thousands of books ; classic literature, poetry, biographies, history, blah, blah, blah. So you would  figure all that energy would give me some strange dreams. And I've had some strange ones: like playing a heated game of poker with Martin Luther King, Ghandi and Mother Theresa. MLK can't  stop talking while he plays, Gandhi hides cards in his robe and Mother Theresa swears when she loses; or dreaming I was making baked macaroni with William Shakespeare. The whole time he kept pointing his finger in the air and saying, 'more cheese or not more cheese, now that's the damn question !'  But my personal  favorite, dreaming I was making love to Pam Grier on top of a long speeding train going through a black tunnel.  Although I don't think classic literature inspired that one. But the dream I'm about to tell you about was special and different from the others.

For starters, I had it three nights in a row. And it was always the same; same details, and same intense emotion. I'm naked and standing on a dark beach. It's not raining, but a strong wind is tossing waves in an almost black ocean. The sky is lit up with lightning and there is a deep rumble of thunder. But what's most disturbing is what's IN the ocean: women! And there are a lot of them! It's tough to tell just how many, but my guess would be about 10 or more. All of them are screaming and trying their best to stay afloat to keep from drowning. I run across the beach and dive in. Surprisingly, the water is nice and warm. Part of my crazy erotic mind wants to believe this is not REALLY an ocean, but the combined aroused wetness of these women.  And their cries are not of distress, but of pure pleasure. But that belief is extinguished after lightning flashes expose the fear in their eyes.  I grab one woman at a time, and with amazing ease, using a nice little backstroke, pull them from the raging ocean. Now I know this HAS to be a dream, because in real life I can't swim a stroke.  When all the women are out of the ocean and sprawled across the beach. A flash of lightning reveals bodies of all shapes, colors and sizes.  Again my erotic mind would normally go buck wild over the sight of a beach full of naked thighs, hips and ass. But the sight of them spitting up ocean water or some of them laying motionless, kills any erotic feeling.  These women are dying. I run from one woman to the next, giving  them CPR and  try to breathe life back into them. It's too dark and I'm too busy to notice any facial features.  I'm just going from one pair of soft lips to the next, until I am exhausted. But what's crazy is; the next thing I know, I find myself face up with the cold wet sand on my back. I look up and see the silhouettes of the women now standing over me in a semi - circle. Now I'M coughing up sea water trying to breathe. Then I wake up. Covered in sweat, and as hard as an island palm tree.

    Chapter 2

I look at NanNan across from me at the dinner table. Her eyes are closed and her hands are palms down on the table. She has a slight smile on her pretty plumb brown face. She's  meditating on her thoughts like she's tasting an aged fine  wine.  Nannan is not only my dear grandmother, but she moonlights as  my dream interpreter.  After I tell her my dreams, this is usually the calm trance she goes into. I got freaked out the first time I saw her do this.

I was ten years old and I told her about a crazy dream I had. In the dream I was playing baseball. And Everytime I caught the ball, it heated up like a piece of coal. When I tried to drop it, it stuck to my hand, my whole arm turned red, swelled up like a huge balloon and exploded. That was pretty creepy stuff for a ten year old.  After she came out of her trance, she warned me not to play baseball for at least a month.  But being a rebellious ten year old and not believing in all that weird Hocus Pocus stuff, I played anyway. A week later I was playing baseball with a few of my buddies and the ball rolled into an empty storm drain. I reached in to get it and was stung over ten times by bees that had set up a hive in the drain. My little arm swelled up like the Nutty Professor. That painful experience taught me to trust Nan.

While NanNan meditated, smiled  and softly hummed a gospel spiritual. I started to nibble on the dinner she prepared for me. One of my favorites; Chicken parmesan, fried rice and collard greens; weird, but absolutely delicious. My

grandmother kind of has an unusual cultural background.

Her father was African American and her mother was Japanese. Now that explains the collard greens and the fried rice, but the chicken parmesan is a little harder.

Nanans mother or my great grandmother Sue Ling Devikio was adopted. During world war 2, when Sue Ling was an infant, her parents were killed during an air raid. Miraculously, Sue Ling survived and was found crying amongst the rubble. She was discovered by an Italian American marine named Vito Devikio. He took the poor kid, as he liked to call her, to an orphanage.
