Prologue
Jake Prince was a former chief of the local tribe. As chief the Council of Elders authorized him to oversee all aspects of the tribe’s livelihood which included all financial and litigation responsibilities. He and his soon-to-be wife, Maria, fought the State in court and won an appeal that led to the development of a lucrative casino on the Cape. With this win, Jake and Maria rose to prominence within the tribe and throughout the Commonwealth. They were quickly becoming the new power couple. They learned quickly to peddle their influence to benefit both their aspirations and the tribe’s interests. It would only be a short time later that Jake and Maria would find themselves in the fight of their lives in Washington D.C.
Chapter One
Rise to Fame
Jake was often mistaken for the late JFK Junior. It was easy to see why. He looked more like an actor or model with his rugged good looks, a six two athletic frame and dark piercing brown eyes and wavy hair. His persona would light up the room when he attended any function. Despite his lack of a formal college education, he could carry on a conversation with anyone on any topic at a high level. He was every bit intelligent as any Ivy League graduate and a more capable leader and speaker than most politicians. His wife, Maria, was a five-foot nine-inch beauty with auburn hair and deep blue eyes. Her athletic body and education made her both gorgeous and intelligent. She was twenty-one when she obtained an undergraduate degree in business. She was elected to the prestigious International Honor Society of Kappa Delta Pi and authored several research articles for the Harvard Review. Many on the Impact of Native American Culture on American Wealth. She held an MBA and a Law Degree from Harvard. Her JD Degree along with the MBA provided the necessary credentials to become the CEO of Jake’s multiple companies. After the mysterious deaths of Jake’s stepsisters, he inherited their local lumber business, several large land holdings, and all their monetary wealth. It seemed odd by the locals that many of his family died under mysterious conditions. Although Jake was named a person of interest and had no real alibis, multiple investigations led by authorities concluded that all the deaths were accidental. It would be a few years later with the help of Maria, that Jake would turn the local lumber business and land acquisition company into a 500-million-dollar empire that included several food service and transportation companies; along with a security and construction company; all which would serve the gaming industry established by the tribe.
Jake’s rise to fame began when a local Sachem, a Chief, requested his help in a legal battle. A court battle involving land that was once encroach upon by the English colonists; lands that should be returned to the tribe; lands that could be designated as a sovereign reservation. The litigation was a necessary step to the development of several casinos on the Cape. Although Jake was only twenty-one at the time, he was considered an expert in tribal ancestry and historical research. It was at that time when he met his future wife, Maria. She was assigned as his personal assistant by the Elders of the local tribe. Any lack of Jake’s understanding of the law or Native American history was more than compensated by Maria’s intelligence and legal expertise. They were a dynamic duo from the beginning. What started out as a working relationship quickly turned into a love affair that eventually led to marriage. They wanted children and planned to raise them as caretakers of their empire and productive members of the tribe. But sadly, they could never have children due to Jake’s sterility. Jake had Chlamydia which was transferred to him while in his mother’s womb. There were no antibiotics available to fight the STD in the country were Jake was born. A country that Jake’s mother escaped to avoid prison for several murders she committed in the States. Although not having the ability to have kids would put a strain on most marriages, the couple always made sure that family always surrounded them. Maria’s mother lived nearby with the local tribe in Mashpee along with several nieces and nephews. She and her mother had experienced their own tragedies in life. When she was nine her dad died when he fell to his death from a scaffold while saving his brother during the construction of a casino in Springfield. As for Jake, he still had his two stepsister’s sons: Tyee and Nodin. He also had a step niece, Malina, but she passed away while having a medical procedure. Jake’s older stepsisters both died during a logging accident at their lumberyard; the same lumberyard that Jake inherited. The same deaths that authorities deemed accidental. Their deaths left Jake the sole caretaker of his nephews. After Tyee and Nodin graduated from Deerfield Academy they attended prestigious universities. Tyee went on to major in Biomechanical Engineering at Stanford. Nodin majored in Architecture at Cornell in Ithaca, New York. Both Tyee and Nodin went on to hold lucrative positions in major companies located in the Northeast. As for Malina, she attended Mount Holyoke College before her premature death cut short her chance to use her skills in Art History, and Native American Studies.
The deaths of Jake’s mother, two stepsisters and a step niece left a void in his life. Jake carried on life by focusing on building a business empire and filling the rest of his time as leader of the tribe. His gain in status and wealth allowed him to make large donations to various state and local law enforcement associations. This along with his philanthropy and having a wife as an attorney squelched any negative press and any possibility of reopening cold cases related to the deaths of family members. All Jake’s businesses grew under Maria’s guidance as CEO. Eventually their empire became so large that they needed additional help. As President of the company, Jake solicited the aid of family using his charm and the lure of wealth. He convinced Nodin to become Vice-President of the construction and security companies and Tyee to serve as Vice-President of the food service and transportation companies. With trusted family at the helm of all aspects of the businesses empire he believed that his corporation would soon become a fortune 500 entity. And it did!
Chapter Two
Answering the Call
It was early in 2016 when those who aspired to be president announced their candidacy. Of all the candidates there was only one who stood out among the crowded field who had experience as a businessman, in land acquisition and casino development. It was this candidate that the tribe would initially and reluctantly decide to back. But before they did, tribal members had to reconcile with the man who had an adversarial history with all Native Americans. In the past, this candidate had monopolized the casino industry in the East until a change in the federal laws allowed more casinos to be developed by tribes. As tribal casinos revenues increased his privately-owned casinos revenues fell. He eventually would have to sell some and file for bankruptcy on others. When this happened, the proposed presidential candidate attacked Native Americans with false allegations and racists comments. He also put-up big money toward lobbying against existing tribal casinos and the development of future casinos by any tribe. These constant attacks on twitter and in the news gave the tribal elders second thoughts about supporting such a Wall Street backstabbing son of a bitch. As the presidential race moved toward the general election the tribe withdrew its backing of the candidate. But at the end of the day, he would eventually become the President. He did so by dividing the country and suppressing voter turnout. He did so by spreading falsehoods about the opposing candidates. He did so my using social media outlets to attract the support of fringe groups. The day after the inauguration the Council of Elders decided that they needed to become more politically active. They needed to make sure that this man would be a one term President. They needed to back one of their own as a future candidate in government. It is no secret that Native Americans have
