FELIX PEREZ As a lifelong advocate for education and collegiate opportunities, my journey in assisting college-bound students began while a cadet at the United States Military Academy. During my tenure in the US Army, I took pride in encouraging and supporting soldiers in their pursuit of higher education. Transitioning from the military, I served as a US Military Academy Liaison Officer to mentor candidates and parents through the application and nomination process, to conduct candidate application interviews, and to assist congressional district offices during candidate nomination interviews. The catalyst for my involvement in the world of collegiate athletics came when our elder daughter, Mercedes, expressed her ambition to play basketball in college when she was in middle school. My wife, Patrice, and I were thrilled that our daughter not only valued education but also wanted to continue her passion for basketball at the collegiate level. Being a former college football player, I embraced the opportunity to jump into athletics recruitment. I was amazed at the misinformation and lack of clear guidance that we encountered as we navigated on this recruitment journey with our daughter. Along the way, we accumulated valuable insights that we used to create a strategy and process to help our daughter reach her dreams of playing in college. I refined this process and have applied it to assist countless other student-athletes and their families in developing a plan to help them find the college that was the best fit for them academically and athletically. I want more student-athletes to live out their collegiate dreams like Mercedes who is currently enrolled at a university in NYC and is a standout on her basketball team.

Upon completing this guide, you will possess the knowledge and confidence to navigate the critical steps in identifying the ideal college or university for both your academic and athletic pursuits.
––––––––
Let the adventure begin!
Chapter 1
Where Do You Stand?
––––––––
In your quest to be a college athlete, this initial step is perhaps the most crucial. This chapter covers the art of self-assessment and the craft of goal setting, which together form the foundation necessary for success in the world of college sports recruitment. By taking time to understand your passions, strengths, and ambitions, you're preparing yourself for one of your greatest opportunities of your life.
––––––––
Identifying Your Athletic Interests and Strengths
––––––––
Your journey as a collegiate athlete begins with identifying your true athletic interests and strengths. This step not only guides your sport of choice but also helps you find your place within it. Take a moment to reflect on the following:
What sports ignite your passion?
In which sport(s) do you consistently shine?
Do you thrive in the camaraderie of team sports or prefer the solitude of individual ones?
Are there specific positions or roles within your chosen sport that perfectly complement your skills?
With this clarity, you will be equipped to channel your time and efforts toward the sport that aligns with your passions and offers the potential for success.
––––––––
Skills and Abilities Self-Evaluation
––––––––
In the previous section, you answered questions that described your passion and what drives you to play your sport. In the context of athletics, self-assessment allows you to recognize your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Identifying weaknesses is not anything negative but rather you have elements for growth.
––––––––
It is essential to answer the following questions in this self-assessment honestly and thoroughly and not be overly critical of yourself. There is no right or wrong answer to any of the questions. There is no pass or fail. When answering rating questions, use a rating scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest. You can choose to or not choose to share your self-assessment.
––––––––
Skill Evaluation
How would you rate your technical skills in your position? What specific skills support your rating? Where do you see room for improvement?
How would you rank your sport IQ and decision-making abilities during competitions?
Peer Comparison
Where do you rank your overall performance against your peers and competitors in your sport? What is your reasoning for your ranking?
How do your statistics compare against your peers and competitors? Are there specific areas where you excel or need improvement?
What areas do you need to be consistent or improve to give you a competitive edge over your peers?
Where Do You Rank?
How do you compare against peers in your district or region?
How do you compare nationally against highly recruited athletes in your position?
One thing to remember is to not be overly critical of yourself or your answers. If you want another opinion, you can present one or more of these questions to people (parents, coaches, experienced players, and others you trust) for their feedback.
––––––––
Believing you are more skilled or talented than highly recruited athletes (when you may not be) can hinder your recruitment efforts in several ways. First, it can lead to overconfidence and complacency, which may prevent you from putting in the hard work necessary to improve. Second, overestimating your talent may lead to unrealistic expectations which may cause frustration if you're not recruited by your dream schools. This disappointment can affect your motivation and self-esteem. Finally, demonstrating humility, coachability, and a strong work ethic is often more appealing to recruiters than pure talent.
––––––––
It's essential to have confidence in yourself and your abilities, but confidence should be balanced with humility and a realistic understanding of where you stand in relation to other athletes. Afterall, only a small percentage of high school athletes participate in collegiate sports. This approach will serve your recruitment efforts and overall athletic development.

Setting Realistic Goals and Aspirations
––––––––
Having recognized your interests and strengths, it's time to set realistic goals. These goals serve as your guiding lights that provide direction along your journey. While aiming high is worthwhile, it's equally important to ground your aspirations in realism. Also, when establishing goals ask yourself:
What are your long-term goals for your college–both athletically and academically?
What short-term goals can support those long-term goals?
––––––––
Being able to articulate your goals is important for several reasons. Goals help you clarify what you want to achieve, stay focused, and measure your progress. Goals motivate you, hold you accountable, and aid in effective time management. They simplify decision-making, foster personal growth, and provide a long-term vision. Additionally, goals can keep you from procrastinating and allowing you to achieve your aspirations.
––––––––
When you set your goals, you should use a goal-setting model. It helps you clarify what you want to accomplish, break down your goals into manageable steps, and track your progress. This structure will ultimately increase your chances of achieving every one of your goals. A well-defined goal-setting model, such as SMART, has criteria that ensure that your goals are clear and actionable.
Specific: Make your goals precise and well-defined.
Measurable: Ensure you can track progress.
Attainable: Your goals should be within reach.
Relevant: Goals should align with your vision.
Time-bound: Set a clear timeframe for achieving each goal.
