    A

    to abate verb to become less strong

    abatement noun 1. (of debts) The proportionate reduction in the

    payment of debts that takes place if a person’s assets are

    insufficient to settle with his creditors in full. 2. (of

    proceedings) The termination of civil proceedings by

    operation of law, caused by a change of interest or status

    (e.g. bankruptcy or death) of one of the parties after the

    start but before the completion of the proceedings. Pleas in

    abatement have been abolished; in modern practice any

    change of interest or status of the parties does not affect the

    validity of the proceedings, provided that the cause of action

    survives.

    abduction noun 1. The offence of taking an unmarried girl under

    the age 16 from the possession of her parents or guardians

    against their will. 2. kidnapping.

    to abhor verb to hate a way of behaving or thinking, often because you think it is not moral

    I abhor all forms of racism.

    abject adjective

    1. abject misery/poverty/terror, etc.

    when someone is extremely unhappy, poor, frightened, etc

    They live in abject poverty.

    2. showing no pride or respect for yourself e.g. an abject apology

    He is almost abject in his respect for his boss.

    abolition n. complete destruction; annulment.

    absconding n. The failure of a person to surrender to the

    custody of a court in order to avoid legal proceedings.

    to accost verb

    to go up to or stop and speak to someone in a threatening way

    I'm usually accosted by beggars and drunks as I walk to the station.

    acknowledgment and undertaking Confirmation in a title

    deed that a person may see and have copies of relevant deeds

    not in his possession (acknowledgment), with a promise from

    the holder of them to keep them safely (undertaking).

    acquiescence noun i.e. expressed or implied consent.

    acquis communautaire [French] The body of Community legislation by which all EU member states are bound.

    acquittal noun A decision by a court that a defendant accused of

    a actus reus [Latin: guilty act] The essential element of a

    crime that must be proved to secure a conviction, as opposed

    to the mental state of the accused.

    acrid adjective describes a smell or taste that is strong and bitter and causes a burning feeling in the throat: Clouds of acrid smoke issued from the building.

    ademption noun The cancellation or reduction of a specific

    legacy because the subject matter of the gift is no longer part

    of the testator’s estate at his death, or the testator no longer

    has power to dispose of it, or there is nothing conforming to

    the description of it in the will.

    Ad Hoc i.e. For this purpose; Ad Hoc decisions are made as and when a situation demands.

    adjacent adjective very near, next to, or touching: They work in adjacent buildings.

    adjective law i.e. The part of the law that deals with practice and procedure in the courts.

    adjournment n. (in court procedure) The postponement or

    suspension of the hearing of a case until a future date.

    to adjudge vb. To hear and decide a case.

    adjudication noun The formal judgment or decision of a court or tribunal crime is innocent.

    admiralty law also, maritime law i.e. That body of law relating to ships, shipping, marine commerce and navigation, transportation of persons or property by sea etc.

    admissible evidence i.e. Evidence that can be legally and properly introduced in a civil or criminal trial.

    to admonish verb 1. To advise or caution. For example, the court

    may caution or admonish counsel for wrong practices. 2. to tell someone that they have done something wrong: His mother admonished him for eating too quickly. 3. to advise someone to do something: Her teacher admonished her to work harder for her exams.

    adroit adjective very skilful and quick in the way you think or move

    an adroit reaction/answer/movement of the hand

    She became adroit at dealing with difficult questions.

    ad referendum [Latin: to be further considered] Denoting a contract that has been signed although minor points remain to be decided.

    adulteration noun The mixing of other substances with food.

    adverse possession i.e. The occupation of land to which another person has title with the intention of possessing it as one’s own.

    adverse witness i.e. a witness who gives evidence unfavorable to the party who called him.

    to advocate verb to publicly support or suggest an idea, development or way of doing something

    advocate noun One who exercises a right of audience and argues a case for a client in legal proceedings. In magistrates’ courts and the county courts both barristers and solicitors have the

    right to appear as advocates.

    Advocate General i.e. an assistant to the judge of the European Court of Justice whose function is to assist the court by presenting opinions upon every case brought before it.

    affidavit noun A sworn written statement used mainly to support certain applications and, in some circumstances, as evidence in court proceedings. The person who makes the

    affidavit must swear or affirm that the contents are true before a person authorized to take oaths in respect of the particular kind of affidavit. To swear an affidavit; to take an affidavit.

    affiliation order i.e. formerly, an order of a magistrates’ court against a man alleged to be the father of an illegitimate child, obliging him to make payments towards the upkeep of the child.

    affinity noun the relationship created by marriage between a husband and his wife’s blood relatives or between a wife and her husband’s blood relatives.

    affray noun the offence of intentionally using or threatening other than by words alone, unlawful violence.

    affreightment noun a contract for the carriage of goods by sea (the consideration being called freight and the carrier the freighter). It can be either a charter party or a contract whose terms are set out in the bill of lading.

    aforesaid adjective spoken of before; aforementioned.

    aforethought adj. thought out beforehand; premeditated.

    aglow adjective bright; shining with light and colour: a city at night, aglow with lights

    aggregate noun something formed by adding together several amounts or things; a total

    e.g. They purchased an aggregate of 3000 shares in the company.

    aggregate adjective i.e. total: The seven companies have an aggregate turnover of £5.2 million.

    to aggregate verb i.e. to combine into a single group or total

    aid and abet i.e. To assist in the performance of a crime either before or during (but not after) its commission. Aiding usually refers to material assistance (e.g. providing the tools for the crime), and abetting to lesser assistance (e.g. acting as a look-out or driving a car to the scene of the crime). Aiders and abettors are liable to be tried as accessories. Mere presence at the scene of a crime is not regarded as aiding and abetting.

    ailment noun an illness: Treat minor ailments yourself.

    ajar adjective describes a door that is slightly open: We left the door ajar so that we could hear what they were saying.

    akin adjective similar; having some of the same qualities: They speak a language akin to French.

    albino noun plural albinos a person or animal with white skin and hair and pink eyes

    to alleviate verb to make something bad such as pain or problems less severe

    The drugs did nothing to alleviate her pain/suffering.

    to allot verb to give (especially a share of something available) for a particular purpose

    The ministry of culture will be allotted about $6 million less this year.

    Three hours have been allotted to/for this task.

    allotment noun 1.

    UK

    a small piece of ground in or just outside a town that a person rents for growing vegetables, fruits or flowers 2. the process of sharing something, or the amount that you get: The allotment of the company's shares to its employees is still to be decided.

    We have used up this year's allotment of funds.

    alluring adjective attractive or exciting

    I didn't find the prospect of a house with no electricity very alluring.

    aloof adjective 1. describes an unfriendly person who refuses to take part in things: She seemed rather aloof when in fact she was just shy. 2. not interested or involved, usually because you do not approve of what is happening: Whatever is happening in the office, she always remains aloof.

    alibi noun [from Latin: elsewhere] i.e. defense to a criminal charge alleging that the defendant was not at the place at which the crime was committed and so could not have been responsible for it.

    alien noun A person who, under the law of a particular state, is not a citizen of that state. Aliens are usually classified as resident aliens (domiciled in the host country) or transient aliens (temporarily in the host country on business, study etc.).

    alienation noun The transfer of property (particularly real property) from one person to another.

    alimony n. Formerly, financial provision made by a husband to his wife when they are living apart. Alimony is now

    known as maintenance or financial provision.

    allegation n. Any statement of fact in a statement of case,

    affidavit, or indictment. In civil cases it is the duty of the

    party who makes an allegation to adduce evidence in

    support of it at trial, under the principle of "he who asserts

    must prove".

    allowance n – 1) money that is given regularly, especially to pay for a

    particular thing; 2) an amount of something that you are allowed; 3) in the US

    – pocket money for children; 4) family allowance is in the UK (old fashioned)

    child benefit; 5) personal allowance UK – an amount of money you can earn

    before you start to be taxed; 6) tax allowance – the amount of income on

    which you do not have to pay tax

    to make allowances for… – 1) to prepare for the possibility of… 2) to

    make allowances for someone or their characteristics is to take their

    characteristics into consideration and not judge them too severely

    alter verb 1. to change something, usually slightly, or to cause the characteristics of something to change
