Chapter 1

Victor Patrick stepped into the central gathering hub of Gideon’s space dock. He stood under six-foot and wore a black tee-shirt, blue cargo pants and an old leather jacket. His dirty blond hair was in his face, and two-day stubble hung on his chin. He was home, well as home as a man who made a living traveling all over the universe could be. Gideon Station was the largest trading hub in the border sector, and due to the volatile political situation, the most lucrative. Victor looked around the rows of uncomfortable chairs. Whether it was the wrong time of day or the regional unrest, the docking area was largely deserted. The entire docking area merged into a large hallway, which would lead up to the commerce section of the space station.

A fat, balding man followed him wearing a surprisingly clean blue jumpsuit, I’m gonna find d’at drink. You want in?

Victor smiled politely but shook his head. Belch, the mechanic on the Loon, was the only official crew member. Still, two weeks of isolation with the rotund mechanic was more than enough. Victor gave him a sly smile, I’ll pass this time, old friend. I think I may go looking for some female companionship.

Belch laughed and gave him a knowing nod. Then turned more serious, What about the girl? Ya’ know we can’t keep her forever?

What? Do I turn her over to the Star Federation, or the Confederates? If I send her to the Star Federation, they’ll send her to a home, where she’ll most likely be forced to turn tricks for the rest of her life.

. . . And if ye send her to the confederates, she’ll starve…. Yeah, we went through this. What about the high-bloods?

Maybe… next time we dock on Cleric, we’ll talk. For now, she stays with us.
