About this ebook

After his release from prison, Mace Walker has two goals – prove himself innocent of grand theft and see the guilty party punished. Even if his ex-fiancée, Felecia McIntyre, helped frame him. Maybe especially so.
Three years ago, Felecia’s heart broke to watch prison doors slide shut behind the man she loved. It broke again when Mace refused to allow her to visit and her letters were returned unopened. Now, her life has changed. She’s busy helping at her cousins’ construction equipment business, and a gray cat named Callahan has showed up in town and attached himself to her.
It’s two weeks before Christmas when Mace walks back into her life. A crime-solving cat may be just what Felecia needs because Mace has changed. He’s angry, bitter, and out for revenge, and Felecia finds herself wanting to help prove his innocence.
Cat Callahan would be just as content watching Christmas–or Dirty Harry–videos with Dax, his traveling companion. Neither Mace nor Felecia display much in the way of Christmas spirit, so It’s A Wonderful Life is an unlikely outcome. But, then, they don’t know how adept Callahan is at solving mysteries!

For Rebecca who, even knowing I’ve had as many bad ideas as good ones, made the leap when I said, what if we … and so, between her imagination and mine, Callahan came to be!

Christmas in the South. Yesterday, rain and thunder. Today, clear and cold. I’ve heard old timers say that December weather is as volatile as any female, but the females of my acquaintance are proof to the contrary. All are crafty and clever cats, like myself. And even the human females I’ve encountered are savvy … all successful in their careers, which makes me doubt that old saying altogether, at least in regard to women. But it does fit the weather!

Speaking of successful women, I’m surrounded by them in this elegant bookstore. The bustle of the Birmingham street outside the large, mullioned windows is visible but effectively silenced in this nicely restored old building, from the outer façade of original brick to the interior with its soft-colored paint and warm wood floors. All in all, the bookstore has my stamp of approval, which is a thing I give very selectively.

I rise and stretch when I notice the four women gathering their wraps and handbags from the long, narrow alcove near the front. It’s been fitted with shelves and coat hooks and umbrella stands. A nice touch of convenience for customers.

Their work here seems to be done for the evening. Anna, a pretty Hispanic, scattered Christmassy floral arrangements all around the store with what her friends called artistic effect. I’ll have to trust their judgement on that. The owner of the place is Sharon, a blonde with neatly coiled braids. She greeted me warmly on our arrival. But why wouldn’t she? I can be charming when I want to be. She’s even invited us all to dine at one of the city’s finest restaurants this evening. Her assistant, also blonde with facial features that make me suspect familial ties, booked a private dining area with its own side entrance to make sure of my welcome.

Not everyone cares for cats in restaurants. Dax says I shouldn’t be offended and should just consider the source. Me and Dax hang together most of the time, but he was working, and food was mentioned, so I hooked a ride with Fee. She never lets me go hungry.

She’s the brunette with green eyes and seems to be part of the management team where Dax works. At least where he works for now. We don’t stay long in any one place, which keeps life interesting. I’ve grown fond of Fee and it isn’t just the food talking. Although her description of the appetizers she’ll deliver just before tomorrow’s ten o’clock opening of this place did make me a little giddy. I’m always up for food so I’ll be sure to tag along. I think she has a very odd name but it seems to suit her somehow. And did I mention she likes me? Of course, she does!

Mace slid his sunglasses into place and stepped out into the blinding sunshine, a free man. Free, that is, unless you considered parole an extension of prison, which he did. For three years, two months, and twenty-one days, every move he’d made had been geared toward gaining an early release. For the foreseeable future, his every move would be motivated by revenge. Being freed from the constraints of parole would just be a bonus after proving his innocence and seeing the guilty behind bars.

He had no clue what would come after revenge. Prison had taught him to focus on the task at hand and not get distracted by what lay ahead. Or behind. Prison had taught him a lot of things.

Without a backward glance at the impenetrable walls behind him, he stepped down from the sidewalk and crossed the street to the parking lot beyond. His truck was pulled close to the low, ornamental fence that fronted the road. From the way it gleamed, he suspected it had just been washed and waxed. His older brother Linc had one hip propped against the grill. He straightened as Mace walked toward him, but he didn’t smile. Mace held his hand palm up, and Linc tossed him the keys with expert precision.

Let’s go home, Mace said quietly.
