This book builds upon the pioneering work of Dr. Daniel Amen, a renowned psychiatrist and brain health expert, who has made invaluable contributions to our understanding of ADHD. His classifications of the seven distinct subtypes of ADHD, which I've interpreted as the seven superheroes in this book, offer us a detailed roadmap to comprehend the complexities of this condition.
While I've added my own creative flair and unique perspective to these classifications by transforming them into distinct superheroes and villains, the foundation of these ideas is firmly rooted in Dr. Amen's groundbreaking research. I deeply respect his extensive work and acknowledge the significant impact it has had on shaping the structure and approach of this book.
In addition, I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Craige Golding, a specialist physician and respected leader in the field of integrative medicine. His mentorship has been instrumental in my journey, providing me with the knowledge, insight, and confidence to bridge the gap between traditional and integrative medicine in the realm of ADHD management. Dr. Golding's influence has significantly shaped my approach to understanding and addressing ADHD, making this book possible.
I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to both Dr. Daniel Amen and Dr. Craige Golding for their significant contributions to the field of brain health and integrative medicine. Their insightful research and teachings have not only enhanced our understanding but also facilitated more targeted, effective approaches to managing ADHD. It's their work that has enabled me to write this book with a nuanced, holistic perspective. I hope this work, in turn, helps our young superheroes and their guardians in their journey towards understanding and effectively managing ADHD.
To my parents and sister – who had to put up with me.
To Nicholas – who chose to do so.
Thank you all

Welcome to Hero Academy
Greetings, courageous parents, teachers, and caregivers, and welcome to Hero Academy, your reliable companion on the journey through the diverse universe of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Here, we do things a little differently. We don't look at children with ADD as mere patients or cases; instead, we see them as superheroes, each possessing unique strengths, or powers,
that are waiting to be discovered and harnessed.
Our journey together in this book is designed to introduce you to the seven distinct regions of ADD, each ruled by a different superhero. Each superhero and their story provide an accessible way to understand the complexity of ADD and how it might manifest in your child. But before we set out on our voyage, let's take a moment to understand what ADD is and, perhaps more importantly, what it is not.
ADD is a neurobiological condition that is often characterized by difficulties with attention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. However, this traditional definition only scratches the surface of the richly complex reality of ADD. Thanks to the pioneering work of the psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Amen, we know that ADD isn't a one-size-fits-all condition. It's a spectrum disorder, with seven unique types, each carrying its own specific expressions, strengths, and challenges.
Each type of ADD has its unique genetic influences. That's right—ADD is often hereditary, which means it runs in families. The genetic nature of ADD underscores an important point: it is not the result of inadequate parenting. Too often, society and even well-meaning family and friends might blame parents for a child's ADD symptoms, adding guilt to the load of challenges parents are already carrying. The truth is, you can't cause ADD
