About the Author
Foreword
At Mass, when Catholics recite the Nicene Creed, they begin this profession of faith with its towering lines: "I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible." For Gilbert Leidig Jr., M. D., the full import of that credal statement is immediate and pertinent. Those who know Gil are well aware that he approaches both the visible and the invisible with the certainty of deep faith. As a physician, he deals with the physical reality of the human body and its need for healing. He is intimately engaged with the visible. However, he accepts with equal confidence the reality of invisible creatures of pure spirit—the unseen choirs of angels, each ordered to a specific role in the divine plan.
The reflections he shares with the reader in this book show how he perceives and experiences the mingling of the visible and invisible in daily life. Gil does not offer a theological treatise. He presents his knowledge of angelology in the context of the ordinary circumstances of family and work and worship and wonder. We glimpse this through a thirty-day window, in which he interlaces the monthly and liturgical calendars. He shows us that the visible world of our everyday lives is yet one, where God sustains and transforms us with his grace, while invisible agents—the angels—surround us doing his will.

Acknowledgments
I thank my first teachers, Mom and Dad, for setting the example for my two younger brothers and three younger sisters, getting to Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation, and putting each other first in their marriage and the six of us first in their lives.
I thank my brother, Paul, for sharing the daily Mass readings.
I thank my scoutmaster, Charlie Ehart, and committee chairman, Tony Svarczkopf, for teaching me duty to God, country, and others and keeping myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
I thank Father Michael Proterra, who, as my sophomore philosophy professor at Loyola College Baltimore, solidified my belief in God and myself, and Father Neil Magnus, guidance counselor at Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, for celebrating daily Mass and directing me to Loyola.
I thank Father Patrick Connolly, Dominican and Catholic chaplain at Walter Reed, who taught Meaghen and me to get each other and our children to heaven.
