    Acknowledgment

I’m immensely grateful to the many individuals who have played pivotal roles in bringing Leap of Resilience to life.

It has been a profound and inspiring journey penning down my thoughts.

First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to my family for their unwavering support, understanding, and love throughout this incredible journey. Your encouragement has been my driving force.

Lastly, to the readers, who will soon embark on this journey, I’m confident that your curiosity and willingness to explore the depths of resilience will be a rewarding experience for you. These pages will provide you with the inspiration and strength you seek.

    Preface

Recently, I encountered a group of eleven individuals, each burdened by life’s trials and tribulations. Among them was a bachelor, a defeated politician, an orphan, a millionaire who had tasted bankruptcy, a former convicted felon, a school dropout, a wise gray-haired woman, an accountant recently laid off, a resilient but frail youth battling an incurable disease, and a determined but physically challenged man. Together, they shared a singular quest–a quest for one person, not a president, a king, a pope, or a sheik/Hajj, but someone who possessed the magic words that could reignite their spirits – You can still make it.

This book is the embodiment of the voice they sought. It is a chorus of inspiration that resonates with everyone, for life’s challenges are universal, and our ability to overcome them lies within.

George Bernard Shaw once declared, People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I do not believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are those who get up and look for circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, THEY MAKE THEM.

In these pages, we explore the profound truth behind these words, as we embark on a journey to unearth the untapped reservoirs of resilience that exist within us all. It’s a journey of rediscovery, transformation, and ultimately, empowerment.

So, as we turn these pages together, remember that the power to shape your destiny rests not in the circumstances you face, but in the choices, you make and the actions you take. This is your book, your journey, and your reminder that no matter where life has taken you, the possibility of greatness is still within your grasp – YOU CAN STILL MAKE IT!

    Welcome to Leap of Resilience.

    Chapter 1

    YOU CAN STILL MAKE IT…

Even after a slow career start.

When it comes to careers, we often encounter two distinct groups of individuals – the broiler chickens and the tortoises. These career paths are reminiscent of the characteristics of their animal namesakes. As their name suggests, the broiler chickens burst onto the scene with a flurry of activity and rapid advancement. Their careers take off like a skyrocket, propelling them to impressive heights in a remarkably short time.

On the flip side, we find the tortoises. They embark on a different path that demands patience, unwavering persistence, and a willingness to endure the gradual and systematic crawl toward success. Unlike the broiler chickens, they don't make a flashy entrance or bask in immediate glory.

Instead, they inch forward, meticulously laying the foundation for their future accomplishments. These individuals recognize that their careers resemble a marathon more than a sprint. They understand that true greatness often requires the passage of time, and they're prepared to invest the hours, days, and even years necessary to realize their aspirations.

Here's the fundamental truth–both the broiler chickens and the tortoises possess the potential to reach their ultimate destinations. Whether you're inclined to soar to great heights rapidly or prefer the steady, measured pace of the tortoise, the landscape of career success welcomes diverse journeys. It's not solely about the velocity of your career's start; it's about the path you tread and the unwavering determination you bring to your pursuit.

Within the confines of this chapter, we'll delve into the inspiring narratives of those who burst onto the scene as broiler chickens, achieving swift success, and those who embraced their inner tortoise, patiently carving their path towards their dreams. Their experiences, challenges, and triumphs will inspire you to embrace the uniqueness of your path and remind you that you can still make it. Understand that success knows no fixed timeline as the career world keeps evolving, and the tortoises among us can discover how slow and steady we can still win the race of life.

"YOU CAN STILL MAKE IT Even after a slow career start… Believe you can."

Understanding the above perspective on careers can offer valuable insights into achieving growth and success in your professional journey. It's not about whether you're a broiler chicken or a tortoise; it's about recognizing that each path has its unique advantages and pace of development. Embracing your career trajectory, whether rapid or gradual, can lead to a fulfilling journey.

While speed may be the hallmark of our fast-paced world, it's vital to acknowledge that not everyone progresses simultaneously. At times, patience becomes your greatest ally.

The scenarios described above should never discourage you if your ambitions aren't yielding immediate results. Maintain your drive, even when your competitors seem to be rocketing to career pinnacles, while you diligently lay the foundation over a decade. Stay resilient if a recent recruit ascends to a managerial role tomorrow, even if you were on the panel that interviewed them just seven months ago. Refrain from attributing your career's progress solely to luck, especially if it's not advancing as rapidly as the next-door employee.

You may not have visited Japan or China, but you've likely heard of the unique giant bamboo tree that grows in many parts of Asia. It's renowned for its extraordinary growth pattern, beginning with a remarkably tough seed from which its seedlings emerge. This seed is so resilient that one must diligently water and fertilize it every day for four years to coax it to germinate. Then, in the fifth year, the seedling finally reveals itself, breaking through the soil. However, there's a fascinating twist to this tree. Once it breaks the surface, this bamboo plant, like many other species, can grow at an astonishing rate of up to four feet a day, reaching a towering height of 90 feet in less than a month.

In practice, you can witness its growth–touch, feel, and watch it rise. Here's the million-dollar question – Does the bamboo tree grow its 90 feet in less than one month? The answer lies in the tree's growth journey, which begins from day one and continues for five years. However, what our eyes perceive is only the growth that's visible above the surface.

Some careers, just like bamboo trees, undergo a period of underground growth.

As observers, we must allow this process to unfold, providing the necessary nurturing through fertilization and watering.

When we don't see immediate results, it's easy to become discouraged in our pursuit of dreams and goals. The feeling of impatience can set in.

Many of us have abandoned our projects just when they were on the verge of breaking through and flourishing. Patience is critical; our time is approaching, even if it goes unrecognized by others. What truly matters is that we recognize it and have the patience to wait for our moment.

Life often leads us to believe that everything should progress in a straight line, devoid of curves, corners, or interruptions. This idealized vision prompts us to hope for a journey as smooth as a walk in the park. But frustration can take hold of us when our career path presents unexpected interruptions, causing us to wait without apparent progress.

Consider this scenario—you've just stepped into the world of work after leaving college, armed with ambitious dreams and self-imposed deadlines for your accomplishments. You envision owning your home by a certain age, welcoming your first child shortly after, and even plotting your own business within the next decade.

These dreams become more focused on the day of your first formal employment. Returning home, you lie on your bed and retrieve that appointment letter, which proudly declares your new role as the assistant branch manager of a banking company. As you stare at the letter, you begin sketching out imaginary routes to the apex of management within that banking institution, guided by your ambitions and dreams.

What's amusing is that even those with more experience and potential, perhaps already residing in their apartments, may be doing the same. Some set no specific deadlines, while others have less ambitious plans. Then, collectively, you all rise from your beds and kneel to pray to the Almighty, hoping to become the company's CEO in just two years.

In a twist of events, the company can't have ten CEOs simultaneously, and it appears God has a close relationship with the current one. This CEO faithfully pays his tithes on time, and due to his relaxed work schedule, he finds more extensive opportunities for praise, worship, and prayer. He recently purchased uniforms for the local church choir and donated a pulpit.

In these new uniforms, the choir's voices soar to the heavens, reaching the ears of the Almighty. The reverend stands confidently behind the pulpit he obtained to preach the gospel, and it seems God is in attendance, appreciating all that this man has given back.

Furthermore, he commands respect at the local charity, where he consistently donates bread, sugar, and butter to support orphans and vulnerable individuals, guided by the teachings of James 1:27 in the Holy Bible. These needy children sometimes forget to ask God for their blessings but remember to request His blessings upon the CEO's hands, recognizing him as the one who feeds and cares for them.

As our heavenly Father works in mysterious ways, He may choose to alter career paths for some while keeping others on hold. Tragically, He often does not reveal all these details to us.

Dear friends, I implore you to understand that careers in employment differ significantly from predictable climatic seasons in Africa, with rain in September and sunshine in May. Unlike pregnancy, where we anticipate a protruding womb by the fourth month and a baby's arrival by the ninth month, careers in the workforce follow a different trajectory.

We often embark on our careers with enthusiasm and a determination to leave a mark, whether through self-initiated endeavors or roles acquired from neighboring companies. It can be surprising to see someone, perhaps the boy next door, who entered the workforce four years after us, rocketing through the ranks.

The uncertainty in our careers should not foster frustration; instead, it should motivate us to work even better. It should uphold our confidence in our abilities and the progress of our endeavors and lead us to jump ship and seek jobs in rapidly advancing companies. It must not deter us from pursuing our private initiatives.

Teachers, keep the chalkboard even if you are yet to be promoted and you find yourself working as a chef in the next hotel. Bank tellers, even if you're still awaiting that branch manager promotion, don't resign to become economics teachers.

Business pioneers and entrepreneurs, keep your innovations alive, even if they've cost you dearly in terms of debt and time. Just because they may not seem to sprout immediately doesn't mean they aren't growing beneath the surface. Instead, let us continue watering these seeds with unwavering hope, believing they will soon germinate. Let's persist with the living hope that we can still make it.

In this age of herbal remedies, you've likely encountered a product labeled 'Kazire.' These natural treatments are carefully crafted from a rich blend of tree leaves, stems, fruits, and roots. As I share with you the belief that success is achievable even after a slow career start, allow me to introduce you to the visionary behind the company that processes and packages this exceptional product.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in industrial chemistry from Makerere University, Robert didn't send countless resumes to various industries. Instead, armed with knowledge of industrial chemistry procedures and a vision for his enterprise, he set his sights on starting his own company. Despite the initial lack of seed capital, he ventured into downtown Kampala, where he purchased empty water bottles and carried them on his journey to his home village in Rukungiri, Western Uganda—over 200 miles from Kampala.

Upon his return, he faced mixed reactions, as his parents had reservations about his decision to begin from scratch. That evening, there were no visitors, no celebratory fanfare, and no special meal served.

After spending several days at home, Robert ventured straight into the lush wilderness, embarking on harvesting leaves and roots from the trees that thrived in the surrounding forest. From sunrise to sunset, his days were dedicated to this labor-intensive work.

It appeared that news of his resignation from a job in Kampala had reached the villagers, and they were not sparing with their judgments. Many labeled him eccentric or even insane, and there were discussions about taking him to psychiatric hospitals for rehabilitation. Unperturbed, Robert remained resolute in his mission to provide herbal medicine to the community, intending to reduce their frequent hospital visits.

Yet, it was an exceptionally challenging journey for this young entrepreneur. He grappled with financial constraints and needed more influential contacts. Moreover, herbal remedies held no prominent position on most people's lists of priorities at that time. His products lacked proper labels and were packaged in reused water bottles. Those knowledgeable about hygiene practices kept their distance from his offerings, and local health inspectors could have cited him for non-compliance. His herbal medicine needed the endorsement of the national standards agency, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards. In truth, nothing about his products or his operation adhered to established standards.

Furthermore, he lacked the technology and resources for preserving herbal medicines, meaning he had to supply them upon production, and consumers had to take the herbs as soon as they were supplied or risk the herbs developing a foul odor and losing their efficacy. He hadn't even considered introducing herbal juices; he felt utterly unprepared for such advancements. It's plausible that when the villagers criticized him for leaving his urban job, he may have briefly contemplated discarding the herbs to seek reconsideration from his former employers. Yet, something within him must have urged him not to do so, reminding him that he still had the potential to make it big.

With time, Robert donned a cloak of courage. As a graduate who rooted his innovations in laboratory experiments, he began to witness a web of testimonials weaving from hill to hill, connecting people who had benefited from his herbal remedies. Gradually, his market began to expand at an astonishing pace.

As we journey through Robert's transformation, it's essential to remember that we often findourselves in the company of individuals who purchase what others are buying, and they stop purchasing when others cease. This phenomenon played to Robert's advantage. Within a few years, the young man once dubbed a witch doctor had transformed into a revered chemist. He not only supplied neighboring districts but also other African countries.

Over time, Robert achieved remarkable success, amassing a fortune. His business was valued at over 25 billion, and his state-of-the-art research laboratory on Mbarara-Kabala Road cost more than 7 billion. He provided employment for more than 300 persons, some of whom were the sons and daughters of those villagers who once considered him crazy. If I could meet those villagers, I would ask them – 'How could you permit your children to work for someone you once believed was insane?'

    ***

It's perfectly acceptable to allow others to shower you with disparaging labels and endure any embarrassment as long as you remain steadfast in your aspirations. While they may hurl demeaning words in your direction, return to your home, find a piece of paper, hang it on your room's wall, and inscribe this sentence – 'Even after a slow start to my career, I can still make it.'

True success often takes us on a pilgrimage to its counterpart, commonly known as failure. This voyage provides us with an intimate understanding of the unpleasantness on the other side, motivating us not to tarry there for long. The sheer distaste for this situation sinks deep beneath our skin and stirs the dormant giant within us, compelling us to take action or face defeat.

This sparks an intense desire to utilize our talents, creativity, determination, and fortitude to break free and seek sanctuary in more promising realms. Frequently, when we escape this extreme terrain under the pressure of our determination, we discover ourselves touching down in the fertile lands of success.

Since childhood, George Colin, an American by birth, had nurtured a dream of becoming a painter. However, the clutches of poverty forced him to bid farewell to school at a tender age, which left him a disheartened young man, his aspirations of establishing himself as an artist on the verge of withering away and fading into oblivion. He never had the opportunity to attend a school that focused on the arts, and he spent his adult years begging on the streets of New York City. He knew that in order to make an impact in the art industry, he would have to take the
