Prologue

The windswept glaciers of Greenland shone brilliantly under the midnight sun. Feywood tightened his parka against the icy chill and surveyed the alien landscape before him. Jagged blue-white peaks jutted up from mammoth ice sheets flowing slowly seaward. It was a view unchanged for millennia, remote and pristine.

Yet he knew that below the placid surface, alarming changes were afoot. As a glaciologist, he had dedicated his career to studying the rapid melt rates of Greenland's ice cap. Core samples showed that glacial retreat was accelerating faster than climate models predicted. The melting ice could raise sea
