    Chapter 1

    Springtime five years later.

Somewhere in the North Sea, off the coast of Scotland.

A sickle moon shines in a cloudless night sky.

A slight swell rocks the Jolly Roger, a converted 70 feet long, World War II Motor Torpedo Boat.

Bob Fitzroy pulls his last lobster pot on board.

A good night’s work, lass, he says, patting the wooden hull.

As he makes his way forward to the wheelhouse, there is a loud roaring sound accompanied by a brilliant flash behind him. He turns around, just in time to see a huge column of water in the distance, followed by a giant boiling white wave heading in his direction.

The fisherman’s weather-beaten face showed no fear. His fight flight reflexes took over. He knew where the Jolly Roger had to be. The question was, could her two engines still give her the speed to outrun the giant wave?

Bob knew of only one destination that might provide safe shelter. The boat’s bow waves had not been so impressive since her fighting days in the 1940s.

The dark outlines of two islands loomed up ahead.

The giant wave was gaining. Bob heard its roar above that of the engines. The boat slewed at an extreme angle, usually only possible in sailboats without capsizing, through the narrow channel between the islands. In the lee of the island, it was pitch dark.

The seething wave was compressed, rose up and was transformed into a fast-moving whirlpool that travelled onwards to the shore, bearing with it, an array of the fruits of the seabed.

    Chapter 2
