    When they first moved into their current home, Aaron and Craig couldn't believe how lucky they were. Finding a stylish house in a small town, only a forty minute drive from the city? And affordable, too? They were living the suburban dream in conditions their parents might be envious of—if either of them kept in contact with their families, that is.

    Their calm surroundings provided much-needed refuge from the hustle and bustle of busy work lives. At home, all they had to worry about was each other.

    After crafting a delightful Sunday dinner, Aaron found himself again in the kitchen. As he cleared away the remnants of their meal, he couldn't help but sneak glances at Craig, who sat comfortably in their open concept living room, engrossed in the local newspaper. A stack had built up—if two papers could be called a stack—while they were away on vacation, but Craig always made a point of following the small-town news.

    Must be nice to find the time.

    There'd been a period, in the course of their partnership, when Aaron took pride in preparing the evening's meal on his own. He used to think of it as a testament to his culinary prowess. Now, as he scraped leftovers into Tupperware containers, a simmering irritation threatened to boil over.

    He'd hoped Craig might offer to help with the dishes, but his husband was immersed in the world of newsprint.

    Suppressing his frustration, Aaron stacked dishes in the sink. The soft hum of the furnace couldn't drown out the tension growing in his chest.
