O MIGHTY HEROES

Samuel Chudwell stared, enraptured, as the blonde soldier in her crisp dress uniform extolled the graduating class of the Willowdale Institute for Boys.

Sam leaned his entire slender frame against the wooden railing. The lights from the auditorium stage bounced off the statuesque lady soldier and illuminated Sam’s soft, cherubic face, neatly trimmed brown hair, and dark, earnest eyes.

Where will you be? The soldier gestured. With each passionate, emphatic movement, the gleaming medals pinned to her chest clinked and danced. Her striking blue eyes never met Samuel’s as she scanned the crowd of hypnotized young men, yet Sam felt deep in his chest as if she addressed him alone. When we dig those red devils out of their trenches and push them back across the dew-speckled grass of the Emerald Plain, I ask you! Where! Will! You! Be!

Samuel’s classmate, Arlo Richardson, grabbed Sam’s sleeve. His green eyes were as wild as his curly black hair, and his big, toothy grin infected Sam so that he, too, found himself smiling ear to ear.

The boys stood at the wooden balcony overlooking the stage of their school’s auditorium, and they pressed shoulder-to-shoulder with the other students in the graduating class, a sea of eager young faces in rolling waves of burgundy satin.
