The Why and the How
The Enigma:
Communication, that intricate dance of exchanging thoughts, is something I’ve often observed to follow a pattern that may not always serve us well. We’ve all been there. The world spins at a maddening pace around us, and we feel an incessant need to keep up. We hurriedly speak, more reflexively than reflectively, in a bid to simply keep the conversation moving. The problem with this automatic form of communication is that it tends to transmit distorted or half-formed messages. Furthermore, we sometimes express ourselves in ways that can, despite our best intentions, disempower the person on the receiving end.
Take these phrases, for instance:
I don’t think you can do this.
Do you remember your last attempt and the outcome?
Isn’t it amusing how they think they’re so special?
I have a feeling you’re not going to succeed.
Your actions seem rather pointless.
You’re always so overly emotional.
These sentences sound familiar, don’t they? I bet you’ve heard or used variations of them in the past. These examples illustrate what I’ve come to call disempowering communication.
We’ve all been unwittingly guilty of it. But here’s the silver lining: we are evolving creatures, continuously learning, growing, and becoming more cognizant of our interactions with others and the ripple effects they create.
The Solution:
The solution, interestingly enough, is embedded within the problem itself. The counterpoint to disempowering communication is what I’ve termed the Empowering Communication Now
approach. Just contemplating this phrase and its implications fills me with enthusiasm. The Now
in the mantra underscores the importance of staying present and mindful, whether we’re delving into the past or charting the future.
Here are empowering alternatives to the disempowering statements I shared earlier:
I believe you’re capable of this.
Every attempt is a new experience. Keep persevering.
It’s beautiful to feel special.
I’m wholeheartedly rooting for your success.
You seem to derive pleasure from your endeavors. That’s wonderful.
It’s natural for emotions to be overwhelming at times.
Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? But is it? The answer oscillates between a ‘yes’ and a ‘no.’ What we choose to concentrate on sets the direction for our progress. The real question that we must pose to ourselves is: how can we be catalysts for constructive change rather than contributing to the problem? What steps can we take to positively impact our collective progress? When or where do I begin this journey? And how should I react when others do not respond as expected?
Together, we can practice, experiment with, and refine this approach, cultivating a communication style that uplifts and inspires, and shaping a more harmonious world. Empowering Communication Now
isn’t just a method; it’s a journey towards a more understanding, compassionate, and connected society. Let’s embark on this journey together.

You know those moments when you’re having a conversation, but your mind is miles away? Maybe you’re mentally drafting your next email or thinking about what you’ll make for dinner. You nod along, offering an occasional uh-huh,
but you’re not truly present. It happens to all of us. But here’s the catch: when we’re not fully present, our communication suffers. And this is where mindfulness comes in.
Mindfulness, at its core, is about being fully engaged in the present moment. It’s about letting go of distractions, putting the phone down, and truly focusing on the person in front of you. When you do this, a couple of magical things happen.
First, your understanding of the conversation deepens. When you’re not splitting your attention between several things, you can actually absorb what the other person is saying. You might notice the subtle nuances in their tone, the hidden emotions behind their words, the unsaid things. You’ll respond more thoughtfully, and your conversations will become richer and more meaningful.
Second, it shows respect. When you give your full attention to someone, it tells them, I value what you have to say. You matter to me.
