About this ebook
In a brilliant stroke of strategy, how did Iphicrates outsmart an imminent enemy threat within the very heart of the city? How did Iphicrates trick the Chians, hidden in the city to reveal themselves? With his men unprepared for a battle, how did he avoid a clash with the enemy using just one simple command! Was his strictness a personal whim or was it a compassion that shielded his men from needless hardship. Why did the act of digging a ditch ignite a blaze of courage among his soldiers before battle? How did he turn the enemy's established routine into their own downfall? And what about his use of blaring horns to command his enemy to move in the wrong direction.? These feats illuminate the extraordinary tactics of an undefeated general, utilizing the unorthodox to vanquish his adversaries.
Conflict, at its core, is a battle of minds. It's the clash of two opposing wills, each vying for dominance. This is why all conflicts are, fundamentally, resolved through psychological operations—psy-ops. Both Sun Tzu and Iphicrates understood this truth. They recognized that the true battleground lies in the minds of commanders leading up to and during a confrontation.
Using Sun Tzu’s astute and insightful maxims to explain the strategic mindset of Iphicrates, showcasing how the unorthodox became a potent weapon in defeating his adversaries.
Were Iphicrates and Sun Tzu merely fortunate, or were their victories the result of unparalleled strategic thinking? What truly defines a successful strategy?

PREFACE
A well-known saying advises us to glean wisdom from the mistakes of others, which can be extended to learning from the diverse experiences of individuals, encompassing both their successes and failures. Are there time restrictions or an expiration date on the relevance of past lessons?
Can we draw knowledge and insights from historical figures like the Athenian general Iphicrates and the Chinese military strategist and philosopher Sun Tzu, despite the vast time and cultural gulfs that separate them, and us from them? Is there common ground between these two distinct figures, and if so, what unifying ideas and principles do they share? Even when providing valuable lessons individually, can their collective wisdom offer a more potent source of guidance? This text aspires to delve into their shared ideologies and principles, aiming to uncover the commonalities that eons later can allow us to benefit from their experiences and accomplishments at a substantially lower cost than they paid.
Sun Tzu's ancient text, The Art of War,
is not your run-of-the-mill page-turner. It's not a mere war manual or a get-rich-quick guide. While it can be read in a single day, its impact endures far longer. This book possesses a unique quality—it meets the reader at their level of understanding, always teasing there's more beneath the surface. The words and maxims remain constant, yet the meaning of these maxims evolves with the reader's deepening insight.
In his insightful analogy, Prussian war historian Carl von Clausewitz likens war to a series of countless duels or a contest between two wrestlers, each striving for victory. His astuteness lies in his comparison of the horrors of every war in history with these more intimate struggles. This perspective compels us to shift our focus from the grand theatre of wars to the myriad forms of conflict that permeate our lives, from the intricacies of business negotiations to the complexities of family disputes.
To truly grasp 'The Art of War,' be it a literary creation or a guiding ethos, one must first adopt a mindset finely tuned to the nuances of conflict and its nature. This means transcending the conventional imagery of vast armies locked in bloody battle and realizing that the principles that govern wars are just as applicable to conflicts on a more intimate scale, whether they unfold in the boardroom or the household. 'The Art of War' encapsulates a philosophy of conflict management, encompassing everything from preventing its inception to managing its size and destructiveness until a resolution is reached.
Similarly, in delving into the triumphs, strategies, and tactics of Iphicrates, one can glean benefits extending beyond the military world, offering insights that prove invaluable on a personal level when viewed through the lens of conflict.
The Art of War
distinguishes itself with its concise and precise maxims. While it may not unfold like a gripping novel, its insights are educational, inspiring and invaluable. The hurdle often faced is transforming ancient military concepts and terminology into a contemporary civilian context. This book endeavors to bridge that gap by furnishing relatable examples, smoothing the path for both initial understanding and sustained success. It is precisely the kind of guide I longed for decades ago as I embarked on the enriching yet occasionally perplexing solo journey of deciphering this wisdom and integrating it into my everyday life.
The Art of War
stands as a cornerstone in the pursuit of mastering conflict management, yet it is not the sole beacon in this endeavour. Its brilliance emerges when harmonized with the collective wisdom and expertise that have since evolved beyond Sun Tzu's era. This synergy empowers the reader to grasp, master, and effectively implement this acquired knowledge. It's in the application that comprehension truly transforms into wisdom.
Sun Tzu spoke of 'combined energy', the art of assigning the right person for the right task at the right moment. This concept extends beyond his book to encompass the broader spectrum of literature. Relying excessively on one source, like leaning too heavily on one person, is unwise. Just as Sun Tzu crafted an army, the reader should assemble a book library that builds on Sun Tzu's ideas. The knowledge available today is staggering. You don't necessarily have to enrol in a college or university for a first-rate education. All you need is the commitment and a device that connects to the internet to rise to the level of an expert in any subject imaginable.
In a single lifetime, the
