    Chapter One

Adam rolled over for the thousandth time and looked at the clock. It was nearly ten in the morning, and he hadn’t slept worth a damn all night. He groaned as he drew his hands down his face and stared up at the ceiling fan, watching the blades whirl in a dizzying circle. Eventually, he gave up on sleep altogether. He sat up on the edge of his bed and ran his fingers through his hair. When his cellphone rang, he glared at it. He really wasn’t in the mood for chatting with anyone.

    Hello?

Hi, can I speak with Adam Gray?

Adam leaned back against the headboard. This is he.

I saw your ad in Grady’s Music and wanted to know if you would come try out for my band. Our singer split two weeks ago.

    When?

What time is good for you?

Anytime today, really. I don’t work on the weekends, Adam said as he picked up the TV remote.

    How about noon?

That’ll work, Adam answered as he flipped through the channels.

Cool. My name is Mitch. We rehearse at our drummer’s loft.

A few moments later, Adam had the directions written out on a piece of paper on the table. He hung up the phone and continued flipping through the channels aimlessly until he finally left it on whatever Godawful infomercial was currently conning the next unsuspecting viewer. He stood and stretched his arms over his head. No sense in trying to get more sleep. He glanced at the TV and nearly had a heart attack.

A commercial for Grady’s Music was playing, and the camera panned around the store as a man did the voice-over. Adam knew that voice like he knew his own. At the end of the commercial, the camera turned back to the counter. Adam had no choice but to sit down as he watched Gabriel Morvant deliver a sales pitch to the camera.

When the commercial ended, Adam shook his head in an attempt to clear it of Gabriel’s face. Their friendship had faded -- well, imploded, really -- seven years ago. Adam didn’t want to admit just how damn good Gabriel looked these days.

Thinking maybe a nice, cool shower would wash away the memories, Adam stood up and opened his bedroom door -- only to get another shock.

    Jesus, Stacy, he stammered
