Chapter 1
An Escape, of Sorts
Themiscyra
Tenth Century
(as counted by Warrior Queens)
Being a height-challenged Amazon wasn’t the worst thing in the realms, but Princess Jemma drew the line at being described as fun-sized
—whatever that meant, and she didn’t have to listen to disparaging remarks from anyone. No matter how she might deserve them.
She wouldn’t have to deal with the looks or comments at all, if it wasn’t for the prophecy. She didn’t want the reminders anymore. The prophecy had kept her trapped inside the Amazon city since she was born, but it was time…
Jemma scrunched her face and finished braiding her golden locks. She sat in front of her beautification table, as her assigned maid called it. Filled with vials of precious minerals and concoctions from the world over, it was the epitome of the lavish life she led as the daughter of the queen of the Amazons.
Jemma swiped a brush from the makeup table where she sat. Then she scrubbed the blush from her cheeks.
A knock sounded on the gilded door. Are you here, Daughter?
Jemma pivoted on her stool, turning to face the entrance. I don’t know any disappearing spells. Or traveling spells. Or how to unlock the front gate,
she called. I’ve only been trained in battle.
Something she meant to remedy after she left.
May I come in?
Jemma considered denying her mother access to her apartments. But what good would it do? Jemma wanted to leave, to explore the realms, specifically the mortal realm. She could amuse herself for hundreds of years there. Making her mother angry wouldn’t earn the permission she desired. No doubt her mother wanted to chastise her for embarrassing the visiting prince.
Yes, come in,
Jemma sighed.
Queen Marina swept into the room. Her gauzy, flowing gown had been a masterpiece created by Helen of Troy’s dressmaker, and it fell all around the older Amazon woman in heavenly cascades and gathers. She moved to the settee and took a seat on the edge, looking uncomfortable on the piece of furniture made for relaxing. As though the queen wasn’t accustomed to sitting on anything less formal, less royal than a throne.
Her mother cleared her throat. We do not flee the room when words grow uncomfortable, Jemma. I should think you would know that by now. We do not even flee from battle.
Jemma grimaced, taking on an equally formal tone. Mother dearest, I do protest.
She batted her eyes and tapped her brush against her palm. I did not want to stand there while he made fun of my height.
Queen Marina arched an eyebrow. I’m not sure he was making fun.
Jemma snorted and threw her brush at her table. The handle knocked a vial of perfume off. It shattered against the floor, adding an overpowering, nearly sickly-sweet scent to the air. He went on about it for ten minutes.
You are…
Jemma glared.
Her mother continued, "…of less stature than most have come to expect of Amazon warriors. It isn’t unexpected that it should be commented on."
I’m short for an Amazon. I don’t fit here.
I’m stuck and trapped. Ready for somewhere new.
You are uncommon.
I am ridiculed for my oddness.
Her mother’s leg bounced, the only sign of her irritation. That isn’t true.
Jemma scowled. Nevertheless. I hear it often enough in the whispers around the palace, Mother. It makes me ill.
Queen Marina met her daughter’s gaze. As you mentioned… before storming out.
I excused myself.
You raised your voice.
Jemma tugged her signet ring from her first finger and waved it. Please issue my apologies, complete with my seal.
Her mother shook her head. I’ve taught you to esteem others better than that, Daughter.
For those that deserve the respect, the grace, or both. He deserved none.
He was a prospective mate.
One of many, Mother, and I’ve already told you I’m not ready to be married.
"He asked to come.
