    Chapter One

    ––––––––

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Savannah, but for want of a better term, we’re a bit screwed.

Not yet we’re not. Savannah Huston shook her head confidently, despite becoming increasingly annoyed with the restricting suit jacket she had been forced to wear.

She liked the lace-ruffled blouse she wore underneath even less. Together with the matching skirt, she looked like... Ella Smith, her business manager, who now sat directly opposite her at the cast iron table, under a dark green umbrella outside in the hot Montana air. The decently sized swimming pool beside them shimmered under the sunlit sky.

Why’d you say that? We still have Rosemary on our side, Ella. They can’t do anything without her.

    Savannah, she sold out.

What? All the blood drained from her veins and left her momentarily shaken and pale. When? Why? I don’t understand.

Two hours ago. She called me on the way here. She said she couldn’t bear to break your heart, but they offered her more than she could ever refuse.

Panic was not something Savannah experienced. She always found creative ways to solve her problems long before they got out of hand.

But now a sense of dismay instantly clouded her usually strong disposition, something she wasn’t accustomed to feeling at all.

She didn’t know how to process the information that the stalwart, straight-talking seventy-five-year-old Rosemary Higgs had caved in and sold out.

They’d spoken about sticking together just two days ago. The Higgs ranch formed an outer protective barrier around Savannah’s land. She’d been so certain she would be safe as long as Rosemary didn’t up and sell.

Generations upon generations of Higgs and Hustons had enjoyed great neighborly camaraderie without so much as one single quarrel between them. They protected each other against other property developers who came nosing around, looking to buy prime land.

    How did this happen?

Are you sure? she asked, still not able to believe Rosemary decided to sell out.

    Yes.

What in a monkey’s butt could they have offered her that she would up and leave because I know it can’t be money.

Silverhearts Casino in Reno, Ella said, sighing.

What? They bribed her with a gambling house in Reno and she’s taking it? Savannah couldn’t hide the incredulity in her voice.

Somehow, they knew what she wanted, and they gave it to her. On a platter.

But a casino? It makes no sense. What exactly did she say, Ella? I need to talk to her—

It’s a done deal. The casino was where Tom proposed to her. We’ve been aware that Rosemary has been feeling his absence more than ever recently. It was a sentimental move on her part. Not a business-related one. But we can hardly blame her. She isn’t getting any younger, dear.

So they played on her emotions? Fucking shady butts, yaldson, dicksticks, Savannah grumbled disgustedly.

Savannah, language dear. We spoke about this.

I’m sorry, Savannah said genuinely sorry. She really did want to cuss less, but her great grandma who lived until the ripe age of a hundred and three also told her nothing aired the lungs better than a long session of good ol’ fashioned swearing. I’m sorry. I’m just so fuck... son of a... gun mad.

She never once questioned Rosemary’s mortality. She honestly believed the woman would outlive everyone around her and reach a century like her great grandma had. She was so mad she could kick a cactus in the balls.

They did a number on Rosemary, and it worked, Ella said sadly.

The property developers had already instantly bought out the smaller Solomon ranch and the Wyatt ranch with their first offers. Savannah and Rosemary though had told them they could eat hay, they weren’t selling. Until Rosemary changed her mind.

Besides the Solomon and Wyatt ranches, there were three other pieces of land they were after. Rosemary Higgs’ land, a span of vacant land, and then Savannah’s land. With Rosemary no longer there to protect Savannah, the only thing standing between her land and the erection of an unsightly amusement park were those eight acres of vacant land. No one knew who owned the land.

Her father had spent exhaustive hours investigating who the land belonged to and failed. His father before him had tried to figure out the same thing. No one knew who owned the land they had dubbed as No-man's-land.

How long was it going to take for those greedy, unscrupulous, arrogant, fucktard property developers to find the owners and buy the land?

Shit on a stick. They were bringing out the worse in her and she hadn’t even met them yet.

They’re ruthless, Savannah, Ella said as if she were answering Savannah’s unasked question. It won’t be long before they lay claim to No-man's-land. I have little doubt with their resources and clout, they’ll find out who the owner is and romance it right out from under them.

Well, they’re not getting my land. Not even over my dead, rotting body.

They needed a total of twenty-eight acres. They already had ten acres in the bag. If she knew anything, ten acres wasn’t going to cover their grand plans.

I don’t think they’re going to take no for an answer, Savannah. I think they can play very dirty. Men like them get what they want. I’m sorry, sweetie, but we have to be incredibly careful about who we make our enemies. Your safety is my biggest concern. More important than this land and your parents, bless them, would agree. Maybe it’s time to sell up. Go live in a big city. Meet lots of boys. Have fun. Life is short but you’re still so young.

Savannah stared at the older woman with her blond coiffed bun and transparent blue eyes.

She had known Ella Smith since the day she was born. Ella had been her father’s business manager and when Savannah inherited the land, she also inherited Ella whose loyalty to the Huston family never wavered.

But there were deep wrinkles on Ella’s face. Tiredness lined her eyes. Her gait was slower, and her shoulders sagged a little. She was starting to show her age which meant she
