Team History: Inception and Early Years

    ●  The Athletics were originally founded in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics.

    ●  The team moved to Kansas City in 1955 before finally relocating to Oakland in 1968.

    ●  Connie Mack managed the Philadelphia A's for 50 years, from 1901 to 1950.

    ●  The A's have won nine World Series titles: 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, 1930, 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1989.

    ●  During the Philadelphia years, the A's won three consecutive World Series from 1910 to 1913.

    ●  The 1914 Athletics, a year after winning the World Series, finished last in the league.

    ●  In the 1929 World Series, the A's came back from an 8-0 deficit in Game 4 to win 10-8, marking one of the largest comebacks in Series history.

    ●  The team's colors are green, gold, and white which are said to symbolize the green grass, golden sunshine, and white baseballs.

    ●  The Swingin' A's of the 1970s won three straight World Series titles, a feat accomplished by only a few teams in MLB history.

    ●  After moving to Oakland, they played their first few seasons at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

    ●  The team's elephant mascot originated from a jibe by John McGraw, saying the A's had a white elephant on their hands. In response, the team adopted the elephant as their symbol.

    ●  The 1971 A's were the last major league team to have an all-white roster.

    ●  The early years in Oakland were marked by colorful uniforms and personalities like Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter.

    ●  Charlie Finley, the team's owner in the '60s and '70s, introduced ball girls to the field - a first in MLB.

    ●  Finley also proposed using orange baseballs for better visibility during night games, but the idea was shot down.

    ●  In their early years in Oakland, the A's won the AL West division five times in a row, from 1971 to 1975.

    ●  The '74 A's team had five 20-game winners: Catfish Hunter, Ken Holtzman, Blue Moon Odom, Vida Blue, and Rollie Fingers.

    ●  During the 1972 season, Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter, and Rollie Fingers – all A’s pitchers – swept the MLB awards: MVP, Cy Young, and Reliever of the Year respectively.

    ●  The team's move to Oakland was controversial, as they left behind a strong fan base in Kansas City.

    ●  The early Oakland A's were known for their colorful personalities, mustaches, and often rebellious attitudes towards the traditional baseball establishment.

    ●  During the 1972 World Series, six of the A's regular starters sported mustaches, a rarity in those days.

    ●  In 1975, the A's traded away many of their star players due to financial constraints, marking the end of their 1970s dynasty.

    ●  The early 1980s were challenging for the A's as they finished last in their division from 1982 to 1984.

    ●  The A's celebrated their 50th anniversary in Oakland during the 2018 season.

    ●  The 1974 team, known for its dynastic success, is still celebrated as one of the greatest teams in MLB history.

    Team Mascot: Origins and Evolution

    ●  The Athletics' elephant mascot dates back to the early 20th century.

    ●  It originated when John McGraw of the New York Giants referred to the team as a white elephant.

    ●  Connie Mack, the A's manager, embraced the term and soon after, an elephant was used on the team's logo.

    ●  The elephant was initially just on team stationary but was added to the uniform in 1920.

    ●  Stomper is the name of the current elephant mascot for the Athletics.

    ●  Stomper has been the A's mascot since 1997.

    ●  The mascot can be seen dancing, performing antics, and interacting with fans during games.

    ●  Stomper's birthday is celebrated every year at the Coliseum with a special pre-game ceremony.

    ●  Over the years, Stomper has had various looks, from a lean athletic elephant to a chubby fun-loving one.

    ●  Stomper often wears a jersey with the number 00.

    ●  The A’s also had another short-lived mascot named Harry Elephante in the 1990s.

    ●  In 2018, for Stomper's birthday, the team had 50 life-sized Stomper statues placed around Oakland as part of a public art project.

    ●  Fans often take photos with Stomper's statue outside the Coliseum.

    ●  Stomper has his own Stomping Ground in the ballpark, a place dedicated to kids and families.

    ●  The elephant, as a symbol, is also featured on the team's sleeve patches and other merchandise.

    ●  The Athletics' name comes from the amateur athletic clubs where the players first formed their team.

    ●  In the early years, the team was sometimes referred to as the A's, the White Elephants, or simply
