Cleo Catra and the Tomb of Desire - Sera C.B.

Cleo Catra crept into the crypt late at night…

Her dark fur and attire had helped her sneak through the palace and out to the catacomb’s weathered entrance undetected, like a silent shadow racing over the desert sands. The princess’s golden eyes shone under the hood of her black cloak as she pulled it back off of her head, allowing her pointed ears to spring out to freedom. The golden studs in her ears glinted in the moonlight for just the slightest moment as the princess eased the sand-worn gate shut behind her, breathing a sigh of relief as she did; with the secure click of the latch, the hardest stint of her stealth effort was over. The cat’s tail flicked in satisfaction as she turned, her draped skirt fluttering behind her as her bare feet descended the stone steps into the quiet halls below.

According to the pilfered spellbook she had stowed away under her arm, the conditions this night were perfect. The moon was a waning crescent, a shining silver sliver that cast its cold light over the calm desert sands from its perch in the night sky. The city around her palace had been deathly silent, the light of lanterns scarcely present at such an hour. Even the brothels and night market seemed at rest, for once. Under such stillness, the spell’s success felt all but guaranteed. Catra just needed secrecy, as well as the spiritual energies swirling deep underfoot.

There were layers to the necropolis. The ancient tomb had been rebuilt and annexed on top of itself, eon after eon and piece by piece, as old floors sunk ever deeper into the shifting desert sands. Age-old curses slept in its furthest reaches, and withering spirits roamed its halls, only growing more aged and powerful the deeper one went. The lowest levels were dangerous even for the most experienced parties, never mind one rogue princess with a sly ambition.

But Catra wasn’t particularly worried. She’d planned carefully, and knew her limits. She simply sought enough spiritual energy to cast her spell. A couple floors down would do. She’d managed well enough at that depth before, not that she’d ever openly admit to such – her teacher would be furious.

The first floor was safe enough for just about anyone to tread, especially during daylight hours, when the dog-masked temple guards patrolled to protect the tomb from desecrations and mischief. The most treacherous part of that initial leg of the journey was getting into the crypt in the first place without being caught by their night watch, followed by keeping an eye out for the wandering torchlight of any stray patrols inside.

Shafts of dim moonlight broke into the halls from slits in the roof above, giving the feline enough light to navigate with some level of care. This was just as well, seeing as any torch she lit would immediately give her away to the outside world through those same holes. She knew her route, however, having scouted it days beforehand, and the steps of her bare feet strode soft and silent through the familiar halls. She’d planned everything. She would not be deterred by such a minor inconvenience as a walk
