    Delicious Pursuit - Teresa Crumpton

    Chapter 1

    CJ

For years, I’ve been running this doughnut shop with my best––and oldest––friend, Jax. She controls all the baking and makes sure the displays stay full. Me? I’m the man behind the business, and our business is booming. But lately, something’s…off. Or maybe I’m just burnt out. Who the hell knows? Seems like it all started last fall with the chick at the gym that was trippin’ and snowballed from there. So much shit has happened since then.

So what the fuck is my issue?

Hey, Jax? I call out from our office.

She pops her head in. What’s up?

I’m going to head out. I’m in a funk and need to hit the gym. I push back from my desk.

That’s probably a good idea, and you’re already dressed for it, she points out with a grin. I’ll hold down the fort. Go work off some steam, or whatever you need to do.

    I glance down at myself.

    Huh. I guess I did.

Thanks, Jax. I head toward the back exit.

Anytime. Hey, you want to do an early dinner with me and Ella tonight? It’s our night to suffer through homework at Belladonna and have dinner with Forest, Jax explains, stopping me in my tracks.

Can we play that by ear? I don’t want to be around Ella if I’m still in this funk. She’s going through enough right now to pick up on my shit. I smile and add a wink to soften the possible rejection.

Jax grins, shaking her head at me before she struts her way back into the bakery.

I beat feet through the back door.

    It would be nice
