In His Arms - E.K. Diaz
CHAPTER 1. MIA
I don't know what happened. Just hours ago, I was looking down at shattered porcelain when a closure meeting with my ex went south. He broke one of my favorite mugs. Slammed it right into the wall.
That’s the charmer I was with.
Now it’s just me on this highway. Alone with the stars and the rain. It’s coming down heavy as chilly fall winds take over the summer’s heat. My car heater broke down months ago, so my hands are so cold they’re turning red just holding the wheel. I press down hard on the gas. Trees and traffic signs blur past me, but nothing seems fast enough.
Nothing could be as I make my way out of New York City. It’s the early hours of morning and I don’t know where I’m going. I stopped paying attention to the traffic signs about a half-hour ago. Letting my insatiable urge to be surrounded by nature guide my way. Nourish me. Maybe I’ll see a nice river or lake. Hell, I’d even settle for a pond.
Bottom line, I’m tired of the city. I’m tired of him.
My phone pings and I see text messages come in from Derek.
Where the hell are you, Mia?
You’re such a bitch to just leave.
This is why you’ll die alone someday.
Four more messages go off before I put my do not disturb on. I didn’t need to see anymore. We were done. Had been done for over a year, but getting rid of him was like trying to get rid of rats in the subways. He was everywhere. Calling me. Following me with his friends. Heaven forbid I went out for drinks with my co-workers. I’d get a slew of nasty messages from him:
Stay in your lane, Mia. God doesn’t like ugly.
Then he sure as hell doesn’t like you. I’d text back. I didn’t always help the situation.
The city was clearly not big enough for both of us. And if there was one thing I needed, it was a fresh start.
I take a random exit off the highway and speed up again. It’s pitch black outside, and trees surround this road on both sides. It bends and curves in a tricky spiral formation. I react quickly to each turn, but I don’t slow down much. Out of habit, I take a peek at my phone and see Derek’s latest message.
This is why our baby died. You’re a hot fucking mess.
My throat clenches, and I lose the fight against the tears flooding my eyes. He had the nerve to throw my miscarriage in my face? Does he have any limit? I swallow hard, feeling my heart start to race. I’m strong, but everyone has their limits.
I miss one turn on the road, and my car goes straight into a tree with a crash. My body jerks forward as the airbag goes off, pounding me in my chest. Specks of black and green cloud my vision as I gaze up at the ripped lining of my car. What else could go wrong today?
I stumble out of it a few minutes later. Thankfully, I feel fine, but it’s still pouring. The
