    The Outcast - Davey Walter

Timmaru thought of how far he  had come but that was now in the past as far as he was concerned. Spontaneously, he descended the hill and wandered to the river that flowed down its base. Slowly, he followed the course upstream until he came to where it forked sending its rivulet to the village. Still withdrawn from reality, he took the rivulet and continued walking. He came before long to the place where he had squeezed the hallucinogens into the water.

He stood looking around. The spot was unmistakable; there was the outgrown tree with its outcropping gnarled roots which he had used to break open the fruits. This was the actual place alright. What had taken place that day took shape in his brain and suddenly he felt like dancing and singing. It occurred to him that he had never really sung since he was at the tender age of nine. He decided to capitalize on the chance he had on his hands. He was beyond himself in much the same way as an appreciated infant is with exhilaration. Thumping his chest repeatedly and ogling at no one in particular, he began jumping around like a demented soul. He was in the process of exercising his voice-box when he heard something that stopped him short and made him prick his ears like an ass.

Through the sparse bush, a voice sailed clearly to Timmaru’s ears. It was a voice that could excite any man anywhere. Yes, even in a monastery. Being one himself, he found his heart thumping away at an outré irregularity. It was a feminine voice and ooh! How beautiful it was. Timmaru who had conjured up a mental impression, hastily covered the ground that seperated him from the source of that sonorous melody. At last he came to a glade and that is as far as he got. Like one who had walked straight into the wall, He halted in his tracks. His mouth went miraculously dry and it was a living wonder that his eyes did not do anything outlandish such as popping out for instance. He felt that they were doing just that.

Before him, he saw that which had wrought wonders in his chemistry. He realized that she possessed astronomical assets and attributes in appearance that even the marvelous voice had failed to imply. Considering the number of presentable colleens that he must have encountered before then. It must have been no under or over-statement when after severe analysis, his brain told him that she was the next best thing after perfection itself. A rare find in this whole universe of vast imperfection. She was simply gorgeous.

As one sensing his presence, the lady stopped singing and turned her attention towards his direction. What she saw both transfixed and scared her silly. She saw through the garments into what he was. A handsome and prepossessing man beyond the common description.

The two beings stood facing each other suspended on a tight rope of indecision. It was only their bodies that stood apart. Their hearts had already covered the space between them and melted into one, strangers though they were. Timmaru tried to advance and immediately saw the danger in the move for fear that had subsided jumped back as before. Puzzled he studied himself and saw his array. His mind clicked on the mistake and he hastily set about ironing it out and setting the damsel’s mind at ease. She was suffering at the horns of dilemma which mercilessly tore her between her ineffable and inexorable affinity towards the outlander and her instincts for survival which urged her to flee for her life. Life which logically was in jeopardy.

Timmaru started talking in a deep and apprehensive voice. He surprised himself by talking in no other language but that of his childhood and birth. It was in him, part of him and flowing through his whole being. He found that for some queer unexplained grounds, his heart started beating even more furiously. But for the strong foreign accent, his grammar was unmistakably flawless. He was surprised because he had not been using the language for so long. It was what required an effort to translate into his language that which his brain manufactured otherwise.

"Hear me out woman; I am sorry to have scared you so I know pretty well that it was unbecoming of a man to steal on a woman as I did. You gave me no chance to introduce myself and I on my part regret no part. Sincerely, I meant no harm and since you are ignorant of it take these straight from my candid heart. You happen to be the only woman I have met whose description I am handicapped to express. And for your information, my life in itself is not particularly short nor are my experiences in life which I truly tell you are vast?

At that the lady’s eyes opened even wider. A gasp escaped her and her lower lip hung down to display a tremor. Slowly, her fingers opened and let go the magnificent floral gems she had picked. She failed to notice for she was making a gargantuan effort to reply. She succeeded and enquired of his identity. Timmaru went on to shed more light upon his enigma.

My identity has got a long tale at its tail. may be you have heard of it and again may be you have not. Then they called me Timmaru and a son of a long deceased Rindama . I am one of you and .....

But why have I never seen you? she cut him short. Who called you by that name? What is your present name? Why are you wearing strange clothes and why are........?

Stop now woman, you are inquisitive aren’t you? Very well, I like you all the more for that as for your not knowing or having never heard of me; I have already told you that has got an endless story behind it. If you will just grant me an iota of your time I shall attempt to enlighten you. He was told that he had the green light. He started with his youth. He went on to fill her on everything that had come about his life. He was glad to be unburdening himself to someone of his blood. He anon got carried away as he related every moment of his past that he was startled half-way when the lady interjected. She was retreating slowly. What puzzled him more than anything else was the transformation that had invaded her face. It was contorted and belied what he had believed. It seemed that the positive response he had been reading a short while ago must have been a cruel farce. The face was covered with what was unmistakably fear and contempt. The lady’s next vitriolic flow of words told him why. she flung a harangue violently at his vulnerable being. So you are the notorious Timmaru she stated rather than asked. Do you think or even hope to get me with your deceitful words? What have you come back for now you treacherous and murderous traitor? Know this, I hate you though I have never met you before and you are a thousand times despicable for what you did to one who in his ignorance took you for a real friend and brother and how wrong he was proved to have been. He paid for that mistake with his life. Do you think that your evil schemes are unknown? Everyone knows and you will dearly pay for them and ooh! how you shall pay.

You committed the unthinkable but even that was not enough to satiate your sadistic inclinations. You had to come back to plunder our animals. You brute, standing here you make me even hate myself for talking with you. If you would like to know something, it now is my prayer that you meet a death most horrible for words.

With those words the lady had turned and shown him a clean pair of heels. The full meaning of the lady’s words and mistake along with the likely consequences hit him. For a horribly long moment he was stunned and he just stared at the fast retreating figure. He felt really sick as he realized that the lady might have been echoing the minds of all his people. If that was the case then he was in very hot soup. If he did not act real fast, then his goose was going to be cooked pretty soft. The only action he could see left to him was to overtake the lady before she reached the village to let out what she thought to be the cat from the basket. At least to buy him some time to plan his next course of action.

Quickly, his legs responded and he took after the fleeing lady like a swallow. However, luck was not with him. He had not covered much ground when he came to an abrupt involuntary stop. There before him stood a stiff legged terror with a spear poised above his head. The later took his lips off his teeth and gave him one wide and very evil grin. That grin was enough to tell him that he would be only too glad to provide him
