Often, I ask myself why I came out here.

My Producing Partner, Chuck, and I just finished having lunch with a young actress named Emily Tisdale. We failed to get her interested in playing the female lead in our television project. Her reasoning was that she’s got her sights set higher than television. Apparently, we’re the wrong fit for her direction in life.

I don’t blame her for thinking that traditional television isn’t worth pursuing. But, the movie side of things is doing even worse. We’re all screwed.  

And, to be honest. I don’t know that I care. I’m not sure why I even agreed to pitch Emily on a role I knew she didn’t want.

Thank you, Chuck tells me. 

For what? I ask him. 

For not saying ‘I told you so,’ he says back. 

Yeah, well. It seems cruel to come down on you after Emily Tisdale gave you that verbal beat down just now, I laugh. It’s a little odd she didn’t once bring up the fact that we’re also trying to get her husband, Austin Turner on the show. No?

Very, Chuck says. Rumor is they don’t really get along. She cheats on him with just about every powerful man in this town that she can get her whorish little arms around. That’s how girls are made out here. Not born, but made into these beautiful, fame-obsessed idiots.

A little harsh, Chuck. Don’t you think? I ask. 

Not at all, Chuck says back. 

Well, let’s go meet with Austin and get that crap out of the way, I ask. I have such a god damn headache. 

Oh yeah, apparently he only wants to meet with you, Chuck tells me, rolling his eyes. 

What for?

I am one of those powerful assholes who Emily slept with, he shrugs. How do you think we got this meeting?

What? But, you’re not even powerful… I tell him.  

Like I said, they’re all beautiful idiots, Chuck says stiffly.

Damn it. Fine. Where am I going? I ask. 

A.O.C in West Hollywood near Doheny on W. 3rd Street, Chuck says, pulling up an e-mail on his phone. There’s already a car outside waiting to take you over there. Call me after y’all are done. One of the Kardashian girls is having a birthday party tonight. I can’t tell them apart. But I figure if it’ll get us ratings to have them on the show. I’ll pitch as many of ‘em as I can find.

Hard pass, Chuck, I grumble as I slide out of my chair. 

The driver avoids eye contact with me for the entire car ride over from Beverly Hills to West Hollywood. At one point, he offers me a bottle of water. I say no thanks. And, he resumes his silence for the rest of the trip.

I look out through the car window at an enormous billboard with Emily Tisdale and Austin Turner gazing lovingly in one another’s eyes. The title of the movie and it’s tagline are written across in sparkling gold lettering.

COLLIDE INTO YOU:

He’s her reason. She’s his rhyme…

As it recedes into the rearview mirror, I’m surprised by how annoyed I feel because of it. I remember taking trips here with my family when I was a boy. And, the sight of a billboard for an upcoming summer blockbuster would make me feel like I was dreaming. I don’t know. Maybe, dreams are better off not coming true…

The driver pulls up to the restaurant.

I rub my palm over my stomach to see if I have room for another meal. I don’t. But, I’ll eat something anyway because these oversensitive actors always think it means I don’t like him if I don’t eat. It will probably never occur to Austin Turner that the mere fact that he even conceives that thought makes no sense. Why should he care what some stranger thinks of him. Especially when he’s a movie star, and I’m just a television producer. 

All right, Eric. This is about making your dream project a reality. So suck up how you feel as soon as you walk inside. I think to myself.
