The Draken Commander - David Arthur

    AVALON

The circle of lizard -men sprinted at them with a chorus of screeches, swords and claws at the ready.

    This is it.

Avalon’s finger jerked on the trigger and a harpoon punched through her attacker’s chest and smashed through his sternum in one fell swoop. His legs buckled and he fell to the ground without hurry, all life drained from his body in that one single shot.

    She shook.

Presley swung one of their naginata as though his life depended on it, his form clumsy but charged with anger – he slit the throat of one and ripped away the weapon of another before losing his own, at which point he began to back away towards the entrance to the brig. His face held no expression. Steely eyes peered into the distance.

    He didn’t panic.

All around them, the fight blurred past – Avalon couldn’t figure out who was dead on her side through the haze of blood, but she knew that there was someone missing. Both sides were taking losses. She stood back and watched for a minute, trying to make sense of the calamity that occurred around her.

Meverick leapt from the deck and spun around in the air – his staff was an extension of his body, the light that poured from his skin an unwilling partner in their pas de deux. He rose to meet what could only have been dragons and then thrust his arms out to turn the tendons in his neck taut. Lightning streaked from his body and from the clouds above him to turn portions of their bodies to ash, burning the slower ones despite their supposed invincibility. One of them dodged back and blasted him with fire, an all-consuming tornado of flame that should have turned him to dust as some of their number had - but instead, it just glanced harmlessly around the barrier he erected and cut out when he ripped through its throat and sent its body spiralling into the water. Their leader and his mount tried to escape, to flap their wings and sail far away from this madman with a wooden stick – but Meverick turned and hurled a ball of electricity straight at them, designed to kill dragon and rider in one blow.

Their leader grinned and threw something back, a fist-sized piece of blue stone that collided with the lightning and exploded with a turquoise light – the light wrapped around the lightning and absorbed it without noise, turning the destructive might of his magic to nothing but a soft glow that failed to penetrate even the dark of the ocean air.

Meverick’s face tightened and more lightning boiled beneath the surface of his skin, but the commander and his remaining ten dragons were already torpedoing away from the ship and disappearing into the clouds. Without his final hurrah
