Chapter 1
Brutus, The Gladiator
BRUTUS SWAYED IN THE sudden rush of wind, the breeze from the newly opened door knocking him from side to side and rattling his chains.
The woman in front of him whimpered, craning her head to see who was coming in, but she failed to spot the tide of Draken guards that Brutus’ captor brought with him, all flooding past her and her daughter to face her husband.
Again?
Her husband hung there, missing an eye and with a body black from bruises that spread from head to toe. He glared at the creatures before him, his lip curled in distaste. Everything about him reeked of hatred and of barely restrained rage, but he was powerless to do anything except watch as they surrounded him. Their leader stepped forward, some strange cross between dragon and human just like the rest of his posse. He held a strong gaze. Fancier garments. But just as inhuman as the rest.
Oh, how Brutus would have loved to tear him limb from limb.
We need more information.
The leader of the Drakens, despite his appearance, did not have a serpentine voice. Instead, it was rich and sibilant, full of the same commanding power of a king. Brutus shivered. That voice narrated the worst moments of his life trapped in that house.
I’ve told you everything I know.
No. You have not.
The Draken leader unsheathed his sword.
The King of Cena sent the ex-Court Wizard on a quest. Is this correct?
Yes. That’s correct.
And you claim that she wears this mark on her shoulder?
He raised a cloth, with a symbol on it. It resembled Avalon’s birthmark. A red, six-petalled flower.
Brutus nodded.
No drink for two days. He swallowed. Must conserve my voice.
Where are they going?
I already told you... I don’t know. I left them before they made contact with the spellcaster!
The Draken commander took hold of Brutus’ daughter and hefted her up from the ground. He held his sword against her throat, close enough to the skin to draw a thin line of blood. The girl whimpered, resisting the urge to thrash away. She sat, bound and gagged for two days straight.
Have mercy.
The Draken scoffed. "Mercy? What do humans know of mercy?"
Brutus fell silent.
"Where do you expect they would go?"
...Seaside. They’d need a ship to cross the sea.
He let his daughter drop, her head smacking hard against the flagstone floor. That wasn’t so hard, was it?
Brutus roared out her name, but one of the Draken guards slammed a punch into his ribs that drove the breath from his lungs and robbed him of his voice once again.
I’ve been ordered to dispose of you and your family.
The Draken commander threw a sword beneath Brutus’ swaying feet. However, we Draken are not unreasonable. Unlike men, we believe in fairness.
Brutus struggled for breath.
Let... let them go.
The reptilian-creature shrugged. "Unfortunately I can not disobey the laws of my people. Despite what you
