    Introducing Kateline Jennifer Jones

Kateline Jennifer Jones was a very determined young woman.

Almost every time she was introduced to new people, they felt the need to call her ‘Katie’, or ‘Kate’, or anything but her name.

This was not something she liked, and it wasn’t something she appreciated. She would always correct them, the first time. If they didn’t use her name the second time, then sometimes… She would lose her temper.

Her name was Kateline Jennifer Jones.

Her best friend in all the world was Sunni Snowstorm.

Sunni understood what it was like to have people mess around with your name, because nobody believed her when she said her last name was ‘Snowstorm’.

Kateline found that to be quite mean.

That wasn’t to say that Kateline and Sunni were altogether the same. Kateline thought that her friend would be quite scared, right now. The wind was howling, and the rain battering on the windows. Sunni was scared of thunderstorms.

A big and loud clap of thunder boomed out, shaking the windows.

    Kateline laughed and grinned.

She frowned, after the sound faded, and wondered just what her friend would describe the noise like. Sunni knew all about myths and monsters, but Kateline could never remember those stories.

A lot of the stories that her friend knew, were quite scary. Some of them were nice, but Kateline got the feeling that a lot of older stories were the kind to scare.

She knew that lots of the stories that got turned into movies for kids like her, started out a lot scarier. They weren’t very nice, but they were told to make a point.

Kateline spelled stories like that as ‘fairy tales’, but Sunni was stubborn and spelled it ‘faery tales’. Their teacher tried to correct her, but Sunni didn’t like being corrected. She said that was the way it used to be spelled, and so it still should be.

Looking at the window, Kateline wasn’t entirely happy. She did like the noise, the thunder, and the flashes of lightning. However, if there was one thing she really didn’t like, it was mud.

Her uncle’s farm was always muddy, and when things got like this, it was so much worse.

Kateline didn’t like to get dirty. She understood that on a farm, you have to get dirty, to do the things that need to get done.

It did not mean that she liked it.

She did like Uncle Dmitri’s farm, but mostly because she liked her uncle. He was always laughing, bright, and happy to do something new. He didn’t talk about ‘practicalities’ and ‘costs’.

Not that he did everything. If something was too expensive, or too hard, he would suggest they do something else instead. Usually, he’d read her a ‘kazka’ - a fairy tale from the homeland.

Her favourite story of his was the Golden Slipper. It was a sad story in parts, with lots of crying, but it was also something that was all about hope.

Kateline didn’t think the world had enough hope.

Everyone, everywhere, should be able to find hope. A lot of people who live really hard lives find hope, but it does need looking for sometimes. The world was never really a fair place.

Her favourite part of the Golden Slipper was where a farming nobody managed to marry the son of the Tsar. That was hope.

Her parents didn’t like most of her uncle’s stories, though. Sometimes he told them with bad words, because his parents taught them to him with bad words. Traditions can be a hard thing to break.

The world is always changing, so what people liked and disliked, always changed. That
