Prologue
~ Joe Claus ~
Watching the trolley drive away with the only sibling I still have contact with stings, even more so because she’s my twin and it’s my fault. The two of us used to be attached at the hip, talking about how we’d run this place together, going so far as to plan why we’d be in charge instead of Ron, the oldest. Of course, it consisted of driving him insane until he gave it to us to get us to leave him alone. Once, we might have put glue on the sleigh, which resulted in needing to pry him out of it. It was her and I against the world. The ironic thing is, Ron actually had left to get away from us, just not as we’d intended. No, it was the bickering between her and I that did it, or so he said. And now, she was gone, too. I can’t even pinpoint when I’d started pushing her away, only that I had, and it had resulted in us always fighting.
My actions, her reactions, and vice versa mean I have to tell our parents their favorite child left because of me. Yeah, I’m not looking forward to that. While they claim to love all of us the same, I know it’s a lie. In my opinion, it’s Brandie, Ron, then me.
Walking to the factory, dreading what’s to come, I think over my options, stopping when I see John Alexander heading toward me. Great! Another person who’s replaced me in some way. Just what I need. I’ve lost count of how many times I heard Brandie say to him, If only you were my brother.
I know I did it to myself with how I treated her, but that doesn’t make it hurt any less.
Joe, hold the fuck up,
he calls out, his usual slow pace not once speeding up. The man is predictable to a fault, down to wearing the same style suit every day. No wonder he and my sister get along so well.
What do you want, John? Come to chastise me?
It depends on your answer. Did my best friend leave because of you?
He’s clearly unamused by the turn of events. Well, join the club.
That isn’t any of your business,
I reply, only to have him grab my arm as I shift to continue toward my destination.
You made it mine. What the fuck did you do?
My temper flares, as does his when I shove him out of my path. I’d kick his ass if I wasn’t already in trouble.
Leave me the hell alone. This isn’t the day to push me.
Maybe it is,
he says before taking a swing I easily dodge. However, and this is not one of my proudest moments, I pull back my arm in retaliation and strike. Mine hits the intended target, his ribs, and he immediately doubles over, gasping for breath. Unfortunately, people have gathered to watch us, and I know this will become a shitstorm once Molly sees I’ve hurt her son.
As if I made her magically appear, she comes running down the street, an expression of horror on her face. He’s pretty strong, but I have the advantage of training as a boxer when I was younger. Ironically, it was meant to help channel my anger.
Why would you do that?
I have no response for her.
